SOHO’s Uninterrupted View of the Sun
Tags:APOD, Science!, Space, Wallpaper
Explanation: Launched ten years ago this week, SOHO (the SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory) still enjoys an uninterrupted view of the Sun. Twelve sungazing instruments on board the spacecraft have explored the Sun’s internal structure, the extensive solar atmosphere and solar wind, and discovered over 1,000 comets from a remarkable orbit around a point about 1.5 million kilometers directly sunward of planet Earth itself. At that location, known as a Lagrange point, the gravitational influence of the Earth and Sun are equal. With scientific instrument teams distributed around the world, the SOHO operations center is located at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Mission operations are planned through March of 2007 to allow the study of a complete 11-year solar cycle. Contributions from SOHO’s instruments are represented in the colorful montage image. Happy tenth anniversary SOHO!

Maris Pacifici
The Maris Pacifici is believed to be the first printed map of the Pacific. It was published in Abraham Ortelius’ 1589 Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, considered to be the first true modern atlas.

Headless Prom Queen Halloween Costume
This is a Halloween costume we made for my daughter: the Headless Prom Queen. The town I live in has a parade & costume judging contest for the kids. She took first place…. well, for her age group. But! one of the judges told us, if they could have picked an overall winner for the day, it would have been her. The stares and laughs she got were priceless. She had a blast. And no, she’s not some crazy freak kid; last year she was a princess, the year before a bumble bee.
Great Orion Nebulae
Tags:APOD, Science!, Space, Wallpaper
Explanation: The Great Nebula in Orion, also known as M42, is one of the most famous nebulae in the sky. The star forming region’s glowing gas clouds and hot young stars are on the right in this sharp and colorful two frame mosaic that includes the smaller nebula M43 near center and dusty, bluish reflection nebulae NGC 1977 and friends on the left. Located at the edge of an otherwise invisible giant molecular cloud complex, these eye-catching nebulae represent only a small fraction of this galactic neighborhood’s wealth of interstellar material. Within the well-studied stellar nursery, astronomers have also identified what appear to be numerous infant solar systems. The gorgeous skyscape spans nearly two degrees or about 45 light-years at the Orion Nebula’s estimated distance of 1,500 light-years.

Was looking in the drink menu at Sam’s By The Sea here on Okinawa, had to snap a pic of this for Tiki!
Look, Tiki! Only 700 yen! (735 after tax! :P)
Shame this isn’t one of the drinks where you got to keep the cup, otherwise I might have ordered one.

They don’t get much bigger than these.
And I’m not buying the “Leaking upstairs plumbing” line either.

Magnetic Air Car
A new take on an old idea. An air powered car, with an on board compressor turned initially, by a magnetic motor powered by a high endurance, high efficiency automotive battery, and in steady state, by recycled compressed air.
Individually, all of these components, air powered cars, compressors, etc., already exist. Combine them with a little “Secret Sauce” and you get… The magnetic air car.
So far so good. Except for one thing. They claim that once in motion, you will get an *unlimited* driving range out of their combination. Supposedly without somehow violating the laws of physics.
Personally, I can see the potential for an extremely efficient system here, but *UNLIMITED* driving range? Unless that secret sauce is pixie dust or something, I’ll believe it when I see it.

Yamaha Midnight Star
This is my new 2008 Yamaha Midnight Star (V-Star 1300 , or XVS1300A)
The bike rides beautifully. For the price, it’s one heck of a
monster. I have nothing against Harley or American bikes, and
will own one eventually. The girl posing on the bike is a good
friend of mine. The purpose of the pic is the leather jacket
she is wearing. A friend in Argentina makes leather/fur goods.
They sent me some and requested some photos so I did a photoshoot
and decided this picture was probably worth posting.
