This will only bug you if you are conceited and believe that the world is centered upon you.

This oddity isn’t because of conceited Americans who think they’re the center of everything, it’s because of conceited Europeans who thought they were the center of everything.

Not conceited Europeans – conceited religious fanatics (Christians/Jews) who think of Jerusalem as the center of the universe: http://www.zionism-israel.com/maps/Jerusalem_1581_Map.htm (I guess that’s why Greece is the cradle of “Western” civilization, while Syria is in the “Middle East”)

Back in the day, the known world surrounded the Mediterranean. There was the ‘Orient’ (the East)
and the ‘Occident’, or West, of which N. America
became a part – about 1,500 yrs later.
