Today (Dec 23rd) is his 90th birthday. He was Federal Germany’s Secretary of Defence from ’69 – ’72, Secretary of Treasury from ’72 – ’74 and Federal Chancellor from ’74 – ’82. He was also the co-founder of what is the G8 today. Not politically active anymore, he still is one of Germany’s most popular politicians. The pictures were taken (1) in the early 70’s, (2) 1974 and (3) 2001.

    The Second Coming

A woman takes her 16-year-old daughter to the doctor. The doctor says, ‘OK, Mrs. Jones, what’s the problem?”

The mother says, ‘It’s my daughter, Darla. She keeps getting these cravings, she’s putting on weight, and she’s sick most mornings.”

The doctor gives Darla a thorough examination, then turns to the mother and says, ‘Well, I don’t know how to tell you this, but your Darla is pregnant — about four months would be my guess.”

The mother says, ‘Pregnant?!? She can’t be. She has never even been left alone with a man! Have you Darla?”

Darla says, ‘No mother! I’ve never even kissed a man!”

The doctor walks over to the window and just stares out of it. About five minutes pass and finally the mother says, ‘Is there something wrong out there, doctor?”

The doctor replies, ‘No, not really. It’s just that the last time anything like this happened, a star appeared in the East and three wise men came over the hill. I’ll be darned if I’m going to miss it this time!”

    Teeny Ted from Turnip Town

    3y3e5gwrsgsdfbdfhfg.jpg (52 KB)

At 0.07 mm X 0.10 mm, ‘Teeny Ted from Turnip Town’ is a tinier read than the two smallest books currently cited by the Guinness Book of World Records: the New Testament of the King James Bible (5 X 5 mm, produced by MIT in 2001) and Chekhov’s Chameleon (0.9 X 0.9 mm, Palkovic, 2002). By way of comparison, the head of a pin is about 2 mm.

The team used a focused gallium-ion beam and one of the electron microscopes at SFU’s nano-imaging facility. With a minimum diameter of seven nanometers (a nanometer is about 10 atoms in size) the beam was programmed to carve the space surrounding each letter of the book.

About 30 miles east of where we live, along US 60, lies the little mining town of Superior, Arizona. It\’s a relatively unremarkable place, but just a few miles past it US 60 winds its way into a gorge dug eons ago by Queen Creek, which eventually winds its way into the Valley and gives its name to a smaller housing development that is one of the dozens of Phoenix suburbs.
