I went as Zombie Jesus for lulz, or to start a fight with stupid Christians. Turns out it was pretty epic according to the general consensus.

Al Franken NRSC Mailer in Minnesota

    Al Franken.JPG (113 KB)

My cousin in Minnesota recently got this pamphlet from the NRSC (National Republican Senatorial Committee) in the mail- addressed to his six year old son:

“Come on in, kids… Senator Franken’s going to tell a few jokes!”
“We shouldn’t have to be ashamed of Minnesota’s senator!”
Al Franked tackled a [sic] protestor at a political rally- and bragged about it
“We shouldn’t have to wonder what he will say…”
Al Franken wrote a pornographic column in Playboy- and thought it was funny.
“We shouldn’t have to apologize for his actions…”
Al Franken has written so-called comedy routines about raping women.
Al Franken: A bad example for our kids; completely unfit for public office

    Amazing Comet Holmes

    17P-Holmes_cook.jpg (996 KB)

Explanation: One year ago, Comet 17P/Holmes amazed sky watchers across planet Earth. A stunningly rapid outburst transformed it from a faint comet quietly orbiting the Sun with a period of about 7 years to a naked-eye comet rivaling the brighter stars in the constellation Perseus. Its largely tail-less shape, as in this wide-angle view recorded on November 11, 2007, became well-known to astronomers trying to unravel the mystery of the comet’s surprising outburst . Still, Comet Holmes had a dim ion tail that was seen to separate from the bright coma. In this image, the separated tail creates the illusion of a reflection nebula. It appears as a faint bluish haze right of center against a background of stars in the loosely grouped Alpha Persei Moving Cluster.

    Venus of Willendorf

    venus of willendorf.jpg (293 KB)

24,000 BC ‒ 22,000 BC Found near Willendorf, Austria. Discovered in 1908 by by Josef Szombathy. Made of limestone and tinted with red ocre.

The Venus is not a realistic portrait but rather an idealization of the female figure. Her vulva, breasts, and swollen belly, are heavily pronounced, suggesting a strong connection to fertility. Her tiny arms are folded over her breasts. The figure has no visible feet, her head being covered with circular horizontal bands of what might be rows of plaited hair, or a type of headdress.

The nickname, urging a comparison to the classical image of “Venus,” causes resistance in some modern analyses. According to Christopher Witcombe, “the ironic identification of these figurines as ‘Venus’ pleasantly satisfied certain assumptions at the time about the primitive, about women, and about taste.”
