Mayhem review

91aWINzC1ML. SL1500 808x1024 Mayhem

Derek Cho (Steven Yeun, “The Walking Dead”) is having a really bad day. After being unjustly fired from his job, he discovers that the law firm’s building is under quarantine for a mysterious and dangerous virus. Chaos erupts throughout the office as the victims of the disease begin acting out their wildest impulses. Joining forces with a former client (Samara Weaving, “Ash vs Evil Dead”) who has a grudge of her own, Derek savagely fights tooth and nail to get to the executives on the top floor and settle the score once and for all.

I picked this up after hearing about it on a Red Letter Media video, they had mentioned that it was better than The Belko Experiment, which I enjoyed. As much as I enjoyed Belko, Mayhem really is a great riff on the same concepts, though there’s obviously different starting points, they both end up with people stuck in a building killing each other, in Belko unwillinging and in Mayhem as zombies. Sorta zombies. Transitional zombies?

Regardless, I enjoyed it, have you seen it, any thoughts?

  • Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare game review

819JcHBQGL. AC SL1500 793x1024 Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare delivers something for every Call of Duty fan with three unique game modes: Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies. Delivering a rich and engaging narrative in a setting unlike anything to date in a Call of Duty game, the campaign is a return to the franchise’s gritty, military roots throughout new environments never before seen in the franchise. The player will embark on a classic war story about grand scale warfare; all set in a grounded future where human conflict has spread throughout our solar system. Multiplayer brings ground-breaking gameplay innovations to deliver the deepest and most engaging Call of Duty experience to date. The title introduces stunning, never before seen, multi-planetary environments, new weaponry, and all-new player abilities to Call of Duty. In addition, the new cooperative zombies experience will thrill players with an original direction featuring fun and unique gameplay, all wrapped into an entertaining narrative sure to excite fans.

There’s like 20 different versions of this, I bought the one that was just the Base Game, which comes with ‘zombie mode’, which I really thought I would be more interested in than I ended up being. The main game of Infinity War is pretty good, they’ve finally gotten off planet and are doing things that are interesting again, unfortunately the devs have said that the fanbase didn’t react well enough to the Space / Future setting, so this apparently will be the last game in that particular direction. It was odd to play a FPS that didn’t have a minimap or threat indicator, all the main game had was a splash of blood in the general direction that you’re receiving damage from, which isn’t as helpful as I could hope for.

I really enjoyed the story and characters of the Mars v Earth conflict, there’s ample opportunity to flesh it out much more, I’m happy I got what I did out of it. The visuals were absolutely amazing and the audio design was on point as well.

Zombie mode was a let down, I thought it would be more better bigly, but it turns out to be just a single map and zombies that get progressively stronger and faster. I’m not going to put in the hours it’ll take me to unlock some of the most basic weapons, so I was stuck with a wimpy shotgun and ww1 rifle. There isn’t much of a weapons progression and the zombie experience is frustrating after the first hour or so.

I didn’t touch the multiplayer mode, I have no desire to have my butt handed to me by 10 year old children.

The Girl With All the Gifts review

41i6Sz7m0L The Girl With All the Gifts

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her “our little genius.”

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite, but they don’t laugh.

They don’t laugh because she’s a zombie, I just saved you an entire chapter of the book!

This was a quick book to read over the holiday and I wasn’t especially wowed by any particular thing, it felt like a cross of a play through Last of Us with one of the more recent Romaro movies with none of the witty storylines that both of those franchises encompass.

Quick to read, can’t really recommend it, but from what I’ve read about the book online, the book story was written separately / at the same time the script development was taking place for the movie of the same name that’s coming out soon.  Hopefully the movie goes in a better direction than the book did.

    Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is a first-person shooter video game developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It is the thirteenth primary installment in the Call of Duty series and was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 4, 2016.

Development of Infinite Warfare began during 2014. It is the first title by Infinity Ward under the new three-year development cycle for the Call of Duty series. The game’s campaign is centered around a battle for the Solar System, which the Settlement Defense Front (SDF), a hostile force who are the main antagonists, are attempting to take over. The player takes control of Captain Nick Reyes of the Special Combat Air Recon (SCAR). They have their own transforming fighter, named “Jackal”, that they can customize as well as a central hub world named Retribution.

Special editions of Infinite Warfare were released with a remastered version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, entitled Modern Warfare Remastered. Infinite Warfares announcement trailer was met with a mixed reception from game critics and journalists and a negative reception from the Call of Duty community. The announcement trailer was the second-most disliked video on YouTube at the time, in part due to a campaign by fans of rival game Battlefield 1 and disgruntled Call of Duty fans expressing frustration at the direction the series had taken.[2] Nevertheless, the game received generally positive reviews upon release; the single-player campaign and Zombie mode were praised, while the multiplayer mode was criticized for its “lack of innovation”, as the movement system is based on the previous title, Black Ops 3

    Freaks of Nature review

    910AwNeatAL. SL1500 818x1024 Freaks of Nature

Contemporary romantic drama pits two ambitious college debate champs (Kirk Cameron, Jami Gertz) against each other in an engaging war of words and emotions.

The Amazon description for the movie is so completely incorrect, hilariously so.  The movie is actually about a town where zombies, vampire and humans are co-existing happily when space invaders do their thing and begin to invade the happy little village.  The plot is some what unique, but acting is so so and the cgi is noticiable but not distractingly so.  It was a fun way to kill some time, just don’t believe a word of Amazon’s lies.

The Girl With All The Gifts

girlgifts The Girl With All The Gifts

The near future; humanity has been all but destroyed by a mutated fungal disease that eradicates free will and turns its victims into flesh-eating “hungries”. Only a small group of children seem immune to its effects.

At an army base in rural England, this group of unique children are being studied, subjected to cruel experiments by biologist Dr. Caldwell. Despite having been infected with the zombie pathogen that has decimated the world, these children retain normal thoughts and emotions. And while still being subject to the craving for human flesh that marks the disease these second- generation “hungries” are able to think and feel making them a vital resource in the search for a cure.

The children attend school lessons daily, guarded by the ever watchful Sergeant Parks. But one little girl, Melanie, stands out from the rest. Melanie is special. She excels in the classroom, is inquisitive, imaginative and loves her favourite teacher Miss Justineau.

When the base falls, Melanie escapes along with Miss Justineau, Sergeant Parks and Dr. Caldwell. Against the backdrop of a blighted Britain, Melanie must discover what she is and ultimately decide both her own future and that of the human race.

Dead Island : Riptide game review

    91i9F7JgHVL. SL1500 726x1024 Dead Island : Riptide

    • Addictive open world RPG style gameplay that allows characters to go anywhere throughout the game’s zombie infested environments
    • A variety of distinct characters including the four surviving characters from the first game (Xian Mei, Sam B, Logan Carter, and Purna), as well as a brand new character
    • A variety of vehicle types, new levels and weather conditions, weapon proficiency (melee and projectile weapons), Hub defense game mechanics
    • Evolved, and engrossing multiplayer, including co-op support

    Amazon

Did you play the first Dead Island?  Did you enjoy it?  This is more of the same, with little to no new mechanics or story line innovation.  The parts with the boat at the very beginning were interesting, but that was about it.   I enjoyed it for what it was, but it wasn’t very interesting and it too me and my co-op partner nearly 2 months to get through the story, it was that boring.

    Ex-Isle review

    91DHafVsT8L 664x1024 Ex Isle

“It is an easy thing to rule by fear.”

It’s been years since the tidal wave of ex-humans washed over the world. Since then, thanks to St George and his fellow heroes, the community known as the Mount has been the last known outpost of safety, sanity, and freedom left to humanity.

But even for the Mount, survival still balances on a razor’s edge—and after a disaster decimates the town’s food supply, the heroes must make a risky gamble to keep its citizens from starving.

And then the news arrives of a strange, man-made island in the middle of the Pacific. An island populated not just by survivors, but by people who seem to be farming, raising children, living—people who, like the heroes, have somehow managed to keep the spark of civilization alive.

Paying this place a visit should be a simple goodwill mission, but as the island reveals itself to be a sinister mirror-image of what the heroes have built at the Mount, the cost of their good intentions becomes dangerously high.

I’ve mentioned this series before and have loved every chapter of this one.  There were a few sad developments, but they were in line with the character development that I’ve come to expect.  Bottom line : if you like zombies and comic book level superheroes, this is a great series to pick up.

The Kill Order (Maze Runner, Prequel) review

914Ge2yhqOL The Kill Order (Maze Runner, Prequel)

They thought the end came in a flash.

Before WICKED was formed, before the Glade was built, before Thomas entered the Maze, sun flares hit the earth, killing most of the population.

The worst is yet to come.

Mark and Trina were there when it happened. They survived. But now a virus is spreading. A virus that fills humans with murderous rage.

There is no cure. No escape.

They’re convinced that there’s a way to save those who are left—if they can stay alive. Because in this new, devastated world, every life has a price. And to some you’re worth more dead than alive.

The end is only the beginning.

    Source: Amazon
    Author: James Dashner

The questions that I had about WICKD are explained a little in this prequel to the Maze Runner prequel, which has nothing at all to do with the the characters of the original trilogy. The actual interesting parts of this novel for me were the flashbacks, which explained exactly what happened the day of the first solar flare and how humanity reacted to it.  I truly want more of that story, I want more in depth explanations of the world they lived in before and during the flare, and less of the clumsy attempt at half and half zombies who sorta have brains but don’t have brains and are crazy and may eat you or may pin a medal on your chest.  It’s doubtful we’ll see these prequel characters again, but boy I’d like to have more stories from how they survived through the solar flare. This was good if you’ve read the original trilogy, but without that introduction to the universe they live in, it’d be hard to suggest this prequel.

Day by Day Armageddon: Beyond Exile review

51W2RsBPjzL Day by Day Armageddon: Beyond Exile

The first book of Day by Day Armageddon took us deep into the mind of a military officer and survivor as he made a New Year’s resolution to start keeping a journal. The man kept his resolution and brought to us the fall of humanity, day by day. We see the man transition from the life that you and I live to the prospect of fighting for his very survival against the overwhelming hordes of the dead. We see him bleed, we see him make mistakes, we witness him evolve. The highly anticipated sequel to the bestselling underground cult classic, Day by Day Armageddon begins where the first novel left off.

    Source: Amazon.com
    Author: J.L. Bourne

Book 2 in the enjoyable Day by Day zombie survival series, and it picks up as if it’s part of the first story, which I’m pleased with, no time jumps to some future period where it’s been safe and secure for months on end.  Nope, one book ends with him walking down a road, the next book picks right up with him walking down that same road just a few minutes later.  In this installment, we find that our hero is no good behind the stick of a helicopter, zombies are everywhere and there’s a possibility that the military still has big wig idiots in charge of some sizable weapons.  Lots of on the nose bits here, but just as soon as I start to get bored with the mundane, we’re whisked away to a different setting that holds my attention completely.  There’s a bit with a tank and a bridge…whew.

    Day by Day Armageddon review

510Vg5Q dIL Day by Day Armageddon

Sporadic news reports indicate chaos and violence spreading through U.S. cities. An unknown evil is sweeping the planet. The dead are rising to claim the Earth as the new dominant species in the food chain. This is the handwritten journal depicting one man’s struggle for survival. Trapped in the midst of global disaster, he must make decisions; choices that ultimately mean life, or the eternal curse to walk as one of them. Enter if you will into his world. The world of the undead.

    Source: Amazon.com
    Author: J.L. Bourne

A decent start to a zombie survival series, it’s presented as a journal though, so there’s a fair bit of jumping between points of view that can be jarring at times. That being said, it was a fun read and I was happy to learn there’s another couple books in the series. What sets this one apart from the other zombie books? Not a whole lot, the protagonist is a pilot in the military who abandons his post to hole up in his home when the end of the world start happening and somehow stumbles his way into some situations that seem somewhat unlikely, but who am I to judge what might happen after the dead rise up against us. . .

Watch Now While It’s in Theaters. When a deadly zombie virus sweeps the nation, a father will stop at nothing to save his infected daughter in this post-apocalyptic thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Abigail Breslin.

    Source: Maggie

While you can tell there’s a low budget at play here, the acting and back story really make up for it, I really enjoyed what they had to present here, which is more of a look at what a community will do in light of rules that are put in place in an unbelievable situation. Yeah, it makes sense to have a quarantine, but what if it’s your daughter?

I recently burned through the first two of these, if you’re a comic book fan, this series of book is for YOU:

The first book is clunky in getting started, but once it’s rolling, it really gains speed quickly.

so this month wasn’t complete shit, there was a cool shirt, and the zombie guy was nice, though I gave him away to someone that would appreciate it more than I. The rest of it was pretty much filler, there was a Aperature vacuum belt, a 80’s press on temporary tattoo, which I almost got excited about thinking it was a vinyl sticker for my car, and then some other loot crate themed crap.

The shirt was nice though. Not work $40, but nice enough to make me think next month won’t suck donkey dick like July’s box did.
