    Lock In

Fifteen years from now, a new virus sweeps the globe. 95% of those afflicted experience nothing worse than fever and headaches. 4% suffer acute meningitis, creating the largest medical crisis in history. And 1% find themselves ‘locked in’ – fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus.

1% doesn’t seem like a lot. But in the US that’s 1.7 million people ‘locked in’ … including the President’s wife and daughter.

Spurred by grief and the sheer magnitude of the suffering, America undertakes a massive scientific initiative. Nothing can fully restore the locked in. But then two new technologies emerge. One is a virtual-reality environment, ‘The Agora’, where the locked-in can interact with other humans, whether locked-in ornot. The other is the discovery that a few rare individuals have brains that are receptive to being controlled by others, allowing those who are locked in to occasionally ‘ride’ these people and use their bodies as if they were their own.

This skill is quickly regulated, licensed, bonded, and controlled. Nothing can go wrong. Certainly nobody would be tempted to misuse it, for murder, for political power, or worse …

    Force Majeure

Directed by Ruben Östlund. With Johannes Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Clara Wettergren, Vincent Wettergren. A family vacationing in the French Alps is confronted with a devastating avalanche.

I watched it because the big guy from Game of Thrones makes an appearance (he’s even on the poster of the version that I watched), but he’s only a bit character in a story that goes much deeper than I was expecting, examining who our loved ones really are in comparison to what we think they are, and how we react to unthinkable situations.

It’s a good film, which is being remade in english, due to be released in just a couple weeks. I didn’t know that going in, but it’s a cool coincidence.

    A Star Is Born

Directed by George Cukor. With Judy Garland, James Mason, Jack Carson, Charles Bickford. A film star helps a young singer and actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career on a downward spiral.

This was the second film by this name and with this story, released in 1954, it apparently was released to theaters as a 90 minute cut, then re-released 30 years later with a three hour cut, which is what I watched. It’s a goof movie, and I wish I had seen it in the order that they were released, because they all iterate on the previous versions. Case in point, the original film was about an actress, this one is about an actress singer, the third was about a singer, then the fourth was also about a singer.

I’d say make a day of it and watch them all, but do yourself a favor and if you watch the Judy Garland version, go for the shorter one, as the extended release has an entire sub plot that goes nowhere and was correctly removed imho.
