1936 Would-be Olympian Ruth Langer of Austria. She was Jewish and refused to compete in Nazi Germany. Less than 2 years later in 1938, at the age of 18, she escaped Austria to Italy wherein she eventually boarded an international steamer to England where she lived a long, happy life until 1999.
