    False equivalence

    False equivalence is a logical fallacy which describes a situation where there is a logical and apparent equivalence, but when in fact there is none. This fallacy is categorized as a fallacy of inconsistency.

    Instead of being a literal statement of formal logic, I think the implication is that he claimed to be courageous, but is so cowardly, vain, and lacking in character that he allows the press to goad him into saying things he obviously doesn’t believe, and which contradict things he said only hours before.
