This is a monthly message to help keep MCS afloat!

Over the past 10 years, what began as a personal image blog has turned into viable community of many contributors with new posts going up every hour, every day. I’d like to reduce and remove all the advertising on the site, dedicate more time to MCS in general, expand the reach of MCS, and I think the best way to do that is Patreon!

In order to do this, I’ve created a page at Patreon.

Check out these awesome benefits available:

Become a Patreon today, for as low as $2 a month, MCS+ badges kick in at the $5 level, which according to my calculations is 2 bud lights or 1 craft beer.  Do you feel like the entertainment provided on MCS is worth a single craft beer? I do, which is why I sink so much time and effort into the site.

To those of you that are already Patrons, you have my heart filled bloody thanks.

    Black Panther review

    black panther Black Panther

T’Challa, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king.

By no means is this a bad movie, but it felt more like a DCU movie and an MCU movie. What do I mean by that? Obvious CGI (bad as Green Lantern at times), music that feels more like a concept pop album (just like Suicide Squad, but with music you’ve never heard of!) and a plot that was really all over the place but didn’t really seem to go anywhere. There was no real connection to the MCU, for better or worse.

The only thing that saved this movie was the actresses and the exceptional Afro Futurism. Chadwick Boseman seemed to be barely there, both mentally and physically. There were times that he looked down right ill. Michael B Jordon was great to look at, but the character of Kill Monger was a weak one with weak motivations and there’s only so much that an actor can do with such a limitations. The ladies on the other hand had great characters and they did a whole lot with what they were given. Lupita Nyong and Danai Gurira were absolutely fantastic as the two main supporting actresses. I’d love to see a movie with just the two of them kicking ass at illegal casinos.

The after credit scenes were completely skippable, but don’t skip them, you’ll want to be able to comment on exactly how skippable and predictable they ended up being.

    From Dust game review

    41RWI5YEWlL From Dust

Discover a unique Modern God game where nature is the star: From Dust , the latest original concept by Eric Chahi, visionary creator of Another World.

I highly suggest playing this either on a top notch PC or a console, it runs like utter trash on anything less than the machine it was specifically designed for.

In this game, you’re controlling matter (water, dirt, lava, plants) to create a path around a premade area to get Humanity from their little village to their next little village. It was a fun diversion that I started started a couple years ago and lost track of, only getting back to it when I got back to my gaming to-do list that I made around that same time. I actually just looked it up, I bought this on Dec 24, 2011 and spent an insane $7.24 and it took me 6 and a half years to get around to finishing it, with only 9.2 hrs on record of me playing it. Happy to have it off my backlog though.  Also, Humanity is truly f’d right in the A if I’m their god.

All that being said, it was a fun little game that played well on my modern computer. I remember back in ’11 it wouldn’t play very well at all on any of my machines, perhaps that’s why it’s been on the back burner for so long?

    Discovery Season One review

e15a6df72d9975ef stdis thm 16.9 1920x1080 Discovery Season One

Star Trek, one of the most iconic and influential global television franchises, returns 50 years after it first premiered, with Star Trek: Discovery. The series will feature a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.

Star Trek has had a long history of series that had a rough first seasons, TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT are all great series on their whole, but their first couple dozen episodes were where they found their sealegs, and at times it felt like they weren’t going to be able to. Star Trek: Discovery had many things working against it: bad show runners (Bryan Fuller can’t seem to get along with anyone involved with both DISCO and American Gods), a fandom that is absolutely RABID about “their” television series, the internet (it’s only been around for 3 of the series), other television shows (this is the first ‘from the ground up’ Trek that’s been serialized along with some kind of mystery box plot), the method of broadcast (only on CBS All Access for Americans, Netflix for the rest of the world, unless you’re in Canada, then it’s on cable TV LIKE GOD INTENDED), and ultimately, the worst enemy it had was it’s own success.

The first two episodes had no mention nor appearance of the titular ship, had a captain that wasn’t long for the series, and a lead character that seemed to be designed to be hated and divisive both on screen and IRL. It additionally started a war that was originally sold as a huge deal, but they only dealt with it in about 1/3 of the episodes. There’s a lot of canon problems with Discovery and I look forward to seeing how (if?) they resolve them by the end of the second season. The acting for the most part is top notch, but the actors can do only so much with what they’re given. I’m thinking specifically of the final scene of the first season where Michael Burnham (played by the amazing Sonequa Martin-Green of Walking Dead fame), in which she had an absolute cringfest of a speech that made little to no sense in the larger scope of what was happening in the rest of the universe (and her own criminal behavior), but she was able to sell it enough to make it bearable.  I’ve also grown to love Doug Jone’s character, the shade between him and Burnham is delicious.

I’m hoping that much like other Trek series, season one is where they find their feet and season two is where they learn to run.

    Sumo 15th Anniversary

Sumo Lounge is hitting their 15th Anniversary (they’re been around longer than MCS!) and they’ve been incredibly kind to me over the years, sending bean bags, chairs, and even a novel inflatable beach chair thing that made me feel weird to sit in and even weirder to attempt to get out of. As part of their Anniversary celebration, a good bit of their stock is on sale and they offered to send me yet another Sumo Sultan, this would be the second one that they’ve sent in the last 10 years, the first is sitting at home in my home office.

I’ve taken this latest one in to my day job where I sit in a cubical all day long wishing I was a bird or even a lizard or something, anything that didn’t live in a pen for most of the daylight hours, and asked my fellow cubical zombies to give me their opinions on the new piece of furniture.

Edited to Add: I published this piece too quickly, here’s some comments from my cubical buddies:

“Don’t you have a job to do?”

“Yeah I sat in it during our planning meeting, I loved it!”

“Get away from my desk please.”

So there you have it, everyone loved the bean bag and everyone loves me too!

I took some pictures, here’s two of them:

That’s a 45 inch tv in the background and a normalish sized couch in front of it.  I simply cannot overstate how large the bean bag is!

Professor Marston & The Wonder Women review

    91FxMTqFhvL. SL1500 836x1024 Professor Marston & The Wonder Women

Details the unconventional life of Dr. William Marston, the Harvard psychologist and inventor who helped invent the modern lie detector test and created Wonder Woman in 1941. Marston was in a polyamorous relationship with his wife Elizabeth, a psychologist and inventor in her own right, and Olive Byrne, a former student who became an academic.

Absolutely fantastic story editing and acting by everyone involved, there were many opportunities to move the plot away from uncomfortable subjects or to frame things in a more softer lens. Directed by Angela Robinson, I’m happy she didn’t go that route and instead tackled everything head on. This is likely one of the most emotionally and logically true movie I’ve seen in the last few years, highly suggest to anyone that’s either interested in Wonder Woman’s roots IRL or the benefits of pushing past easy answers to complex problems and situations.

    Coco review

coco movie poster 1 691x1024 Coco

In Disney•Pixar’s extraordinary adventure, a boy who dreams of becoming a great musician embarks on a journey to uncover the mysteries behind his ancestor’s stories and traditions.

Coco was missing something and I can’t really put my finger on it. It had a story that flowed pretty well and the animation was top notch, but I didn’t feel the emotional punch that normally comes with Pixar films.

    Tron Evolution game review

    81TFZNnWicL. AC SL1500 726x1024 Tron: Evolution

High Mobility Combat – Battle the enemies of the TRON world with your light disc using a dynamic blend of Parkour and martial arts movement on your heroic mission across the Grid.Vehicular Action – Fast paced exciting light cycle racing and combat in the digital TRON world.Bridge the Legacy – TRON: Evolution is the prequel story to the film TRON: Legacy and unlocks mysteries in the rich TRON mythology.Online/Multiplayer – TRON: Evolution has an innovative online experience featuring persistent character progression.Voiceover Cast – Voiceover by actress Olivia Wilde as Quorra, Bruce Boxleitner as Tron, and others to follow

My first achievement for this game was 12/3/16, then after that day apparently I didn’t pick it back up until a couple days ago when I completed the rest of the game in one sitting. What distracted me from finishing Tron: Evolution? Who Knows! Could have been a dog or a cat, but in reality it could have been ANYTHING because this game was straight up rough to play at some points. There’s a cool backstory here about what happened immediately after Clu attacked Tron and Flynn, the former being captured and the latter escaping and forming a resistance with the ISOs. Shamefully though, it looked like all the cut scenes were recorded at 480p and voice over work was not recognizable, though the store page claims both Bruce Boxleitner and Olivia Wilde worked on the game.

I could over look both of those if the game elements of the game actually delivered, but I found myself running into broken areas of the game in nearly every level, there was one section towards the end that was a simple wall run + jump to a handhold on another wall that I had to try out at least 40 different times, trying to gauge the distances and jumps. It came down to just dumb luck that I was able to get past that section, but after about the 15th attempt I had to turn down the game sound and turn on some other music just to distract me from the de-rezzing sound and reboot animation that was frustrating me so much.

This is is skippable if you’re not a huge TRON fan and even then….ehhhhh

    Cosmo review

    0 666x1024 Cosmo

NEW ONGOING SERIES! “Space Aces” – Part One: Cosmo is a Martian with the skills of a warrior and a heart of gold. He’s the leader of his M.A.R.S. unit that explores the solar system. What was meant to be a routine scouting mission turns into a much larger adventure Cosmo and his friends stumble upon a panicked human and encounter some ferocious foes!

I’m a huge fan of what Archie Comics are doing with all their properties with modern takes on The Jetsons, Flinstones, Archie, and Scooby-Doo. Cosmo is one of those properties that they’ve had for over 50 years but have only printed a handful of issues with the characters and the preview on the above amazon.com link really sold me on both the story of a bumbling Earthman meeting Cosmo The Martian, who’s on The Moon for some reason or another. It’s not an overly complex series but I’ve really enjoyed the first couple issues that I’ve read.

    Critters 14 review

    91PttzI8sPL. SL1500 841x1024 Critters 1 4

A group of small, furry aliens makes lunch out of the locals in a farming town.

There’s been four movies in the Critters franchise, all of them about and hour and a half long each, the last two leading directly into each other, though the last movie was definitely set in a vastly different location than the first three. Since they were so short, I was able to watch all four of them in an afternoon. From 1986, 1988, 1991, and 1992, all of them featured practical effects over computer generated effects and for all their work to make the Critters look scary, I actually found them to be precosious and even cute at times. Yes, there’s the eating your face thing, but I feel like they’re just tribbles that got out of the wrong side of the bed and are able to grow legs and feet when they eat too much. It’s a type of low budget / low brow franchise that unfortunately I don’t think we see much of any more.

The acting was on par with what I expected from the franchise, the practical effects were obvious at times, but damn if the series didn’t have heart. I’d love to see another entry in the franchise if they were able to capture this feeling on film again without any use of computer generated Critters.

Some notes from each of the movies:

    Critters 1:
Billy Zane (the evil guy from that movie about a boat) and Ethan Phillips (Nelix from Star Trek: Voyager) were here, both of them much younger than I think I’ve seen either actor in roles that ended up not being what I expected from them.

    Critters 2:
How did the critters become a giant ball of Critters? How did they stay that way?
Also, lots of nudity from Roxanne Kernohan, who I’ve just discovered was not actually featured in any men’s magazines.

    Critters 3:
Leonardo Dicaprio, as a very young man with a shitty step father. The step father situation is resolved to my satisfaction though, spoiler: the Critters ate him.

    Critters 4:
    Critters in spaaaaace.
Angela Basset as the take no shit navigator of a space ship. I like her, she’s going places I think.

    Blade Runner 2049 review

    91FxHUNVsqL. SL1500 883x1024 Blade Runner 2049

A new blade runner unearths a secret that could plunge what’s left of society into chaos and leads him on a quest to find a former LAPD blade runner who’s been missing for 30 years.

I wasn’t expecting this movie to lose so much of it’s emotional impact for me when I watched it at home. Maybe it was because I was watching it on a smaller screen with only 5.1 surround sound vs the Big Screen with it’s 200 speakers of surround Dolby Digital glory, but something was missing, or at least dampened down.  Perhaps it was because I already knew the answers to the mysteries?

The story was still great, the visuals were still amazing.
