2018 TGIOKDI Year In Review

This is a first time thing for me, I’ve never done a year in review on my own personal site before, but I figured with all the books, games, and movies that I’ve been posting about, I might as well do one.

In 2018 I have:

  • Read 37 books
  • Finished 26 games
  • Watched 308 movies

I’m counting the comic books that I listed on the site, they were large enough and of enough importance to make a post, so they’re getting counted.  Obviously a few of the movies were watched more than once (mad max: fury road was watched like 10 times!).

I built some cool LEGO, my kegerator froze over, I had a horrible stomach bug, and Hurricane Michael caused a week long power outage that I survived by using my grill and reading a lot of books.  At the beginning of the year, I dug my comic books out of storage in the closet and re-bagged and boarded them, then just a month or two ago, I completely redid my home office. It has a ton of shelving now, all of which is in use.  Went to MegaCon and met a bunch of celebrities.  There are pictures somewhere.

There’s times where I feel like I don’t do much, but then looking back, there it is.

My plans for the next year:

  • Have kids
  • Make more better money from my side gigs
  • Pay off debt
  • Replace the carpet in my house
  • Unhook myself from all corporately owned social media, I think all I have left is facebook, but I want to save all my content to my own personal website, so that’s going to be a project in of itself.

    Star Trek Fleet Command

maxresdefault 1024x576 Star Trek: Fleet Command

A mobile game that uses the way overused “timers” method of gaming, in which the players have multiple countdown timers that they manage and get time reduction tokens by completing mundane tasks. As you might imagine, you can purchase an in game currency to in turn purchase those same reduction tokens. It’s all very boring, very repetitive and a complete waste of time. Here’s an ingame screenshot, in it there’s a “winner” countdown with 4 counters inside, a lootbox count down with 3 counters inside, then on the left is a wrench that has the two upgrade countdowns.

Here’s the trailer that sold me on trying the game out.

The trailer is a complete lie, at no point is there FPS space combat, it’s all automated and pretty damn boring.

It’s a great trailer though, mad props to studio that made it.

    2018 my[confined]space year in review

For the first time ever, an official End of Year, Year in Review!  Three weeks early too, so I wonder if any of these stats will change in any meaningful way in the next 20 days!

In 2018, there were over 21,889 posts (down from 2017’s 23,001), which received 3,320 comments (down from 2017’s 4,873).  Traffic was sorta stable at 2,163,753 page views for 2018, slightly down from 2017’s 2,321,227 page views.

    We had several theme days!

Obviously it’s my blog so I’m the most talkative person here, but I do miss the days when people would talk amongst themselves.  Is there a barrier to commenting on the site that I’m not seeing and can address?

    Pacific Rim 4k

I’ve heard that this movie is pretty great in 4k and I found it for $9 at Target, so I jumped on it as quickly as possible, which it turns out was not as easy as I had assumed. We have several Targets here in town, and while the Target.com website suggested that the closest store had a couple copies, they did not, in fact, have any. They checked their internal inventory system and saw that there were two copies on the far far side of town, so I called that store and asked them to pull one for me, which they had no problem doing.

When I got down there though, I found they had pulled me the HD version and not the UHD version, so the guy had to go hunting for it, luckily finding it without much fuss.

I’m here to tell you, this is by far the definitive version of the film, and if you really want to put your new 4k tv through it’s paces, this is the movie to do it with. That scene with the plasma sword while in orbit? Absolutely breathtaking. That scene where they punch the other thing? Absolutely breathtaking. It’s a great film to begin with, but the 4k transfer is nearly flawless as far as I’m concerned and highly suggest seeing it in that format.

    The Incredible Hulk 4k

    81cyINrfcSL. SL1500 805x1024 The Incredible Hulk 4k

Academy Award nominee Edward Norton stars as scientist Bruce Banner, a man who has been living in shadows, scouring the planet for an antidote to the unbridled force of rage within him: the Hulk. But when the military masterminds who dream of exploiting his powers force him back to civilization, he finds himself coming face to face with his most formidable foe: the Abomination -– a nightmarish beast of pure aggression whose powers match the Hulk’s own!

A perfect example of a terrible, horrible, no good, lack luster, incompetently and badly done 4k transfer. All the colors are muted, all the dark parts of the movie are inexplicably darker and more difficult to see, and I get the sense that there is no HDR on this disk. The audio track is still great, the surround sound features during the soda bottling fight are awesome, but all those great audio effects are for nothing if you can’t see anything at all on the screen.

Skip this 4k version, I’m sure they’re going to go back to this well again to make better choices.
