Exactly my thought. Also, who the hell gives thumbs down to giving a proper plant identification?

Probably ought to be. In this case this is pretty much as explicit as the scene gets. As mentioned above the film is 'Paprika' and it is well worth a watch. Definitely takes the concept of Inception to the next level.

You hit the mail on the head with your comments on what the real sources of crime/violence are. Drug crimes could almost be rolled into the problems of poverty and mental health as a large number of such crimes are committed by people who are too poor to seek any meaningful help and are instead self-medicating their mental health issues. But there are a variety of drug related crimes, and so it does deserve to stand on its own. Although our research on the connection between guns and crime rate is primarily correlational, it is much better than simply reasoning by anecdote. The deficiencies you point out, though, are very real. It is very easy to create samples biased by geography or demography that are then used to reason for the nation at large. There have been some very good studies that use widely representational samples and possess very little bias. Stunningly they conclude that the issues is terribly complex and that we mostly need to address tangential issues rather than passing token reforms. However, there is one area of research that strongly indicates a connection between the presence of guns and death... suicide rates. When a gun is available there is a greater likelihood that depressed or otherwise mentally ill individuals will commit suicide; in part this may be because the action can be immediately committed to, low chance of failure, and the lack of pain in the process of death. Once again, the primary connection between guns and violence is mental health and even then we need to be concerned about self-targeted violence rather than these individuals harming anyone else.

That fear, in this case, will be allayed by a post coming soon to the NSFW side of the site.
  • Comment on battlling depression by creating a new template for MCS (2013-08-12 14:40:44)
As another MCSer who has battled depression (just recently been coming out of a multi-year depression/grieving process) I can empathize. Keep forging on! And I being that I've lost countless hours here over the years I would definitely be down to support it with some stickers!

Using the appropriate "Free Candy" sign, your new Skoda could fit up to 10 children in its trunk!* *Results may vary by age and size of child, our estimate is based on the standard Euro sized child. *Cooperation of children not guaranteed. *Legality of offering children free candy varies by location.

I was also wondering how this shot came to be. Most American heroes get a lot of attention in Japan, there was a two story Spiderman on the Nagoya TV tower leading up to the release of one of the newish films while I was there. Also the combination of animals, ninja, and pizza are always rather popular over there so I wouldn't be surprised if there was much more where this came from.
  • Comment on My first successful manned mun landing (2013-06-21 21:17:16)
Just got this game for my dad and myself. I haven't yet made it through the tutorial set, but I look forward to my first contact with the Mun! I look forward even more to my first contact with the Mun that includes as few explosions as yours did here. I'm definitely looking forward to the next stages of development, but so far I don't think my high hopes are misplaced.

Right? After all these other trolling posters I was like "Oh no! Evil Commie Obama!" Then I saw this and breathed a sigh of relief because as long as our commander keeps on privatizing he must be a capitalist deep down inside after all. On another note it appears to clearly say "SS Cuts" on the right side... sure is might be part of a word like "Mass" but shouldn't we take it literally and just be happy that the intensely nationalist police state will loosen its grip on us?

The first moment I knew it was going to be the worst movie ever was the torture/autopsy montage that taught them the stunning lesson to shoot it in the chest... Because I'm sure that the marines featured had so many problems aiming for center mass before that... And then there are your valid complaints. It was worth watching all the way through only because I had an excellent group of friends to MST3K the whole thing.

Going a tiny bit farther than "optical illusion" (which is right on the mark): Color vision works best only near the absolute center of the eye, the further from that the more color blocking the brain does. Your brain is attempting to turn the static images into a more continuous stream, thus features from the previous picture/s can distort those that come after. Your brain actually stores memory of faces as separate components and there seems to be a critical junction in the brain that integrates these features so that so can recognize faces as unique. By not looking directly at the images you are getting an interpretation of those parts more so than recognition of the full figure. There are a lot of fun hiccups in the brain that makes this work but those are a few items that could be the basis of this individually or in combination.
