    I remember hearing about this sweet ride. It was a ground effect vehicle (Wiki it) that could put 600 troops on the beach in a hurry. It’s fate was to never be used beyond testing, and to rust out at it’s dock. Sad really… 8-{

    This technology has also been used by the U.S. The Coast Guard had ships that used the same ground effect. They were called Surface Effect Ships (SES’).

    Ever since I’d first become aware of the ekranoplan concept, I thought that Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose would have had a better chance of commercial viability if this approach had been taken.

    “The International Maritime Organization recognizes three classes of ground effect crafts:

    1. Type A cannot operate out of ground effect.
    2. Type B can jump to clear obstacles by converting kinetic energy (speed) into potential energy (height), but cannot maintain flight without the support of the ground effect.
    3. Type C are certified as aircraft, with the ability to operate safely and efficiently in ground effect.
    GEVs are not aircraft and can be certified as boats.”

    Funny, if this is not an “atkinson” post, you don’t scream… You ASSHOLES!
