Here’s what I think: it was a dead or dying tree that was being cut down, and it had been hollowed out by rot or bugs, then filled up with water from recent storms.

    Very common with oaks. A limb breaks off high up and rain fills up the middle and rots it out. The only thing that they are good for after this is next years fire wood.
