I think you guys are distorting the implied message here a little. It doesn’t say anything about refusing to accept reality because it’s bad. I think of it more like this, to believe in concepts like love and goodness you need fantasy. Not because you want to keep unpleasant things away, that’s a negative, but in order to have something to replace it with even if science tells us that love is merely a chemical reaction. Or like a great man said, “The only words that ever satisfied me as describing Nature are the terms used in fairy books, charm, spell, enchantment. They express the arbitrariness of the fact and its mystery.”
