    Dr.Devine

: Really, when you take violence out of the equation, as you say, then it becomes irrelevant to the diagnosis. Which makes it much easier to understand people, as they no longer fear you will punch them in the face for something they say. All it really does is make people more honest, ironically.
And since I don’t fear violence…. wrong on the avoidance mechanism. I’ve had clients take swings at me when I keep pushing. Really, so long as no one shoots me, I’ll be good. SO I wouldn’t have let him off with “lets agree to disagree”.
And besides, you guys aren’t actually attacking my diagnosis, you are attacking the way about which I go to make my diagnosis. My opinion still stands.

    dieAntagonista

    Putridity:

Yeah but you weren’t funny. You just felt sorry for him, even I as a non psychologist could tell.
My own pseudo diagnosis amused me, however, so I won’t complain.

Anyhow, continue with your humorous speakage.

    Dr.Devine:

Ah yes, I have read that so often, about psychologists who seem to have a problem with Freud. I can see why, but he did say, sometimes a pipe is just a pipe. (yeah I’m particularly proud for knowing that one)

So that makes perfect sense then. I thought all paranoia, without exception, is an exaggerated form of ego, which seemed weird to me.

Here’s one more. Is it true that most chronic tics, like facial tics or whatever, as well as other strange phobia are a result of trauma that wasn’t rationalised? And I don’t mean common phobia, like being afraid of gross things, but unexplainable things, for example when people are afraid of tiny objects, like cornflakes in a bowl.
And if yes, does this include OCDs. I don’t know how complicated this is, and how much you would have to explain, if it’s too much – you don’t have to.

I’m particularly interested in OCDs that have to do with numbers. I myself have a huge obsession and problem with them, and I never quite understood why. Kind of like Tesla, his problem was that everything had to be dividable by three.
For me it’s many things but for example all numbers have to be even. Odd is ok, but only if it has to be. And prime numbers make me sick to my stomach, among other things.

    Dr.Devine

Hmmm.. OCD doesn’t really match up too much with how I have you pictured so far. Strange associations with numbers may occur, but I wouldn’t guess it to be an obsessive compulsive disorder.

I’ll use Tesla as an example. Tesla’s OCD was developed as a for m of self-punishment for himself, due to guilt over seeing (Some Tesla biographers say causing. I don’t think so, it doesn’t fit his other behavior.) his younger brother die. Confidence/self-esteem and OCD typically don’t run parallel to one another. Confidence usually alludes to comfortable with your self, where as OCD (usually, everyone has their anomalies.) usually hints at a slightly more stressed out consciousness, with heavy insecurities concerning their self.

You might just be holding strange associations with numbers/ types of numbers. Maybe some small trauma back when you were in your math class that proliferated in your subconscious, due to hormone imbalance or something else that happened at the same time.
I have issues with standardized tests for instance. Whenever I take one, I’m incredibly time inefficient, because I stop every five questions and look back over trying to decipher a pattern.
Around the first time I took a standardized test, my father was absent due to his being in rehab for alcohol abuse. I was a middle schooler, I began to look for patterns and other things of the sort, in an effort to provide a sense of order and control to the world around me. I imposed/searched for patterns on/in lots of things, from my writing to conversation to pretty much anything. The only one that stuck, however, was the looking over standardized tests for patterns in the answers.
Its not OCD, its just a minor inconvenience.

    nyoki

Numbers and words make sense to me…mostly. I have trouble w/ pictures. I do realize the irony of saying that on a picture blog site, but it’s true. “I had to drop calc III the firsv time I took it because the prod was a physicist and kept drawilg things on the board. I underqtood nothing of what he was say{ng. Next term, a different prod, my 4.0 was safe.

    Dr.Devine

….I never took calc three. I suck a big fat one at anything higher than precalc. I barely filled my basic math requirement. Not because I can’t do math… more because I get distracted, and end up staring at the girl across/ next/ below me’s chest like the pig I am.

    nyoki

Dr.Devine: I had to take it. It was a pre-req for every other math class I needed for a degree in math. I had to find a way to pass it.
My point was that people learn things in different ways. For most students the physics approach was much easier, for me the opposite was, and is true.
My youngest son is bipolar w/ OCD. On the right meds, his OCD simply disappears. It didn’t take willpower to ignore it. It didn’t take therapy or psychotherapy, no tricks or gimmicks; it simply took one pill twice a day. There were some side effects so he decided to try once a day. The OCD and the mania came back a little bit, but he keeps it under decent control and lives his life.
    Anyways, what were talking about?

    Dr.Devine

The pill you were talking about seems like its either a very powerful stress reliever, or maybe an antidepressant. Depending on the type, maybe an antipsychotic. Though there are other ways around it, a pill does take far less effort. It sounds like your son’s OCD is most likely due to hormone imbalance (the bipolar), not an ongoing psychosis. Though pills can work with those too, the goal is to induce relaxation and eliminate anxieties. (Actually, there are a few fascinating studies with placebos being used on psychosis-based OCD with amazing effect. Of course, when you tell them that the pills are fake, the effects can come back, but some of them figure out its just all in their head. Completely irrelevant, but interesting nonetheless.)
…And I have no idea. I think I was talking about dieA most likely not having OCD, using my control based semi-psychosis concerning standardized tests as an example.

Oh, I completely missed the phobia bit of your post dieA, my bad. I probably should have read more into your post, rather than skim it. whoops.

And it is true that un-rationalized, ill-rationalized, or even over-rationalized trauma can cause facial tics or OCD.
    It just varies a lot.
There are literally hundreds upon thousands of reasons why the guy whose face twitches every time you say “salt” could be twitching. These could range from childhood trauma, too subconscious association, to even a bad experience concerning a salt shaker in a restaurant when his wife left him. Who knows?

I maintain that I don’t think you have OCD, just maybe a semi-psychosis concerning numbers. OCD would have you acting (or attempting too act) on the world around you, in the hopes of maintaing control and order, and thus sating your psychosis. That you become nauseated at the worst of it, what with the prime numbers, shows a more inwardly directed control issue. OCD can have its roots in control-based traumas (Watching your little brother die, wife get raped, etc.), which end with the subject attempting to impose his/her order at all costs on the world around them, or with an attempt to punish oneself for the previous lack of control. If prevented from exercising their routine, the result often can be inward, but is usually more outward in nature, to force the obstacle (a person, whatever) to allow them to carry on. Usually manipulation of some sort, like a complete public breakdown, or excessive shouting and repeated mantras.
But… no nausea really. At least, not with most OCDs. Who knows, you may have an extremely mild form. But still…. their are certain personality traits that link up with OCD, and confidence isn’t one of them. (Again, usually. People are in no way uniform.) I mean, the root cause of these disorders is a general lack of confidence. (Alright, I said control, but control and confidence are damn near synonyms when talking about any compulsive disorder.) I mean, inflicting a loss of control on yourself for loss of control on the world around you doesn’t usually occur. A more common response would be imposing even tighter control on yourself, or trying like hell to keep your environment to conform to you. (Some really quite interesting cases of OCDs getting so frustrated a deprivement that they actually destroy their environments. i.e., burning down asylums. Which is why deprivement isn’t recommended for really heavy cases of emotional trauma OCD, but I digress again.)
And nyokki, if you were really into the maths to that degree, it would make sense that physics would throw you off, at least as far as the like-personalities theory goes… Most mathematicians just have an inherent understanding of whats going, and using alternative theory to explain it to them would really only serve to confuse them….
Oh, and phobias… phobias are trickier than tics in their own right. Don’t get me started on specific examples. Phobias are usually the result of internalized predispositions towards things combined or supplemented by traumas.

    nyoki

Dr.Devine: He takes Lithium an oldie but a goody for him. He has been on so many different meds. Paxil sent him t a psychotic episode that scared the shit out of me. I really thought I had lost him.

Anyways, I find your insights intriguing. I always thought I had a phobia of heights, it turned out I actually have Vertigo. The spinning table messed me up for days.

    nyoki

Oh, also it doesn’t matter how high. A single step I didn’t expect can trigger it.

    Putridity

    *Sigh*
Now I do feel sorry for Cmonkey. I don’t know him, don’t care about him and couldn’t care less what anyone thinks about him. But I just caught a small amount of what he is getting loads of.

    In essence:
“No, your clarification of your intent does not count because I have already decided your purpose and meaning.” Devine, DieA… I dropped out of high school and now work in a call centre, I don’t pretend to understand the mentality behind peoples actions or words and to be honest it doesn’t really interest me. Bluntly put, I am not very well educated. But please, avoid telling me what I think. That is something that I reserve the right to not know. Who knows? I may have felt sympathy on some level for Cmonkey and decided to defend him but if so it was subconscious and I want it to stay that way. Self awareness would be the ultimate boredom. How can you surprise yourself if you truly know yourself?
So please just stop with the “these are your real intentions” statements and maybe accept that I speak without intent to mislead or irritate.

    Putridity

Putridity: Wow… That was possibly the most thought I have ever put into anything on this website. I should just avoid these parade’s of grammatical elegance and intelligence flexing called Internet Fights altogether.
I am not smart enough and I nearly always end up just saying “fuck it” and giving in 😀
Refer to argument with elzarcothepale about LURK MOAR on picture of that O.C chick with brown hair.
Hugs and kisses everyone, Arsenic and Flamethowers.
    😛

    Luke Magnifico

    FUCK YEAH

    MonkeyHitman

Putridity: is okay man you don’t need to feel sorry for me. I already how dieA is and anyone who says anything that is not with her ego and/or support me she goes and attack them without thinking first. You are not the first person she have done this too. just proves my judgment about her.

    Dr.Devine

    METAL COLLAPSE.

    Dr.Devine

    ColombianMonkey: AHEM.
    HABLAS INGLES SENOR?

    MonkeyHitman

Dr.Devine: Yo hablo y escribo en ingles, destacando de mi ingles no va a ampliar tu horizonte.

    Luke Magnifico

    Dude

    THAT’S NOT ENGLISH EITHER

    O wat a c’lamity.

    Dr.Devine

@ColombianMonkey: Your spanish is impeccable, which is why I can actually fucking understand it.
So to put it simply, all your posts, for sake of interpretation, should be in spanish. So at least you utilize proper syntax. You fuck.
    Fuckity fuck fuck.

    Dr.Devine

    FUCK!

    Luke Magnifico

    ColombianMonkey: I’ll ampliar your horizonte.

    MonkeyHitman

in spanglish that sounds really gay.

    Dr.Devine

    @ColombianMonkey:
    A) That wasn’t in spanish.
    B) That may have been the point.
    C) TITS!
    D) CALDOONS!

    Luke Magnifico

    Dr.Devine:
    A) Correct.
    B) Correct again! Dude, you’re on a roll, don’t mess up now.

    C) …Yes!
    D) YES!

    Luke Magnifico

    Also, Fuck!

    Dr.Devine

    Alright…. I think we’ve learned something today.
Without females updating on this thread regularly, it quickly devolves into atypical /b/ behavior.
Not to say there is anything wrong with that.
    Speaking of which…
I’m pretty certain I haven’t been banned. So is /b/ just down for the week?

    nyoki

So, I go to /b/ to see if it’s down and found a nifty video about cats’ eyes.

    nyoki

    Whoops!

    MonkeyHitman

Dr.Devine: Por que hace esto? Usted muestra esta imagen ambiciosa pero usted no muestra ambición de una persona ambiciosa!

    MonkeyHitman

god i hate remembering alt accent codes.

    Luke Magnifico

You could just go Alt Gr.

    Like this

    áéíóú

Also, maybe it’s a cunning disguise. A double bluff, if you will.

    Regarding the ambición.

    Dr.Devine

    Sigh. Thread is dead.

    nyoki

Dr.Devine: ‘Tis a pity, valiant effort.

    Luke Magnifico

Your lack of faith disturbs me.

While we chatter idly, so the poast’d bible abides.

A graph of post activity here would resemble that of an AC power supply; yes, it goes down, but then it goes up again. Always up.

    Then down.

    And then BACK UP.

    And then down.

And so on, and so forth. You understand.

And remember this; the RMS value for voltage on that graph is found by Vo/sqrt2, and will always be positive.

    I think you’re picking up what I’m putting down/

    nyoki

LukeV1-5: Seems the best way to revive the old bat is to say she’s done for.

    Dr.Devine

    @nyokki:SHHHH!
And where the hell is dieA?
Dead serious. I go through all that regurgitative typing on compulsive pathology, and nothing. Nada.
: And so goes the law of undulation.

    Dr.Devine

    “Ok, ok, ok.
    Here’s what we do.
    We get a van, right?
And one of those life rafts, from ships. You know ships? Yeah, those ships.
We put the van on the life raft. I’d say a VW van, because they are made of paper.
Then, we fill the van with colourful rocks.
    Are you still with me?
Then, we drive ACROSS THE OCEAN.
    To Panama.
Now, I have heard from certain entrepreneurs that there is a huge market in Panama for colourful rocks.
That’s the word on the street.
So when we get to Panama, we sell the colourful rocks, and buy a coke factory.
And then we live like wealthy, Panamanian drug barons.
    No. Not barons.
    Drug KINGS.”

    Dr.Devine

Name who said it! And no, original poster does not get to claim credit.

    Dr.Devine

Damn it. The thread really is dead. Well, goodnight sweet prince.

    Putridity

Dr.Devine: My first assumption would be that MagnusButfoorson fellow. Seems to be his style.

    Luke Magnifico

Not enough swearing for the foorson of butts.

    Dr.Devine

    Putridity: INCORRECT.

Dr.Devine: Thak you. Ctrl-F works wonders.

    Luke Magnifico

Cheaters always win, and winners always cheat.

    nyoki

LukeV1-5: Who cheated? Not I, certainly.

    Dr.Devine

nyokki: It seems like cheating. I meant to test your memory, rather than your computation skillz.

    nyoki

Dr.Devine: You’re only rule was that the author couldn’t answer. I purposely stopped memorizing things in grad school.

    Luke Magnifico

nyokki: Maybe that’s why you just called him “only rule that the author couldn’t answer”.

    nyoki

LukeV1-5: Duuuurh. I can’t believe I did that. I NEVER do that. So it couldn’t have been me. Who was it?! Who typed that?

    Luke Magnifico

    IT WAS ME

    Dr.Devine

    …..fiiiine. fuck.

    Luke Magnifico

Well, isn’t this a terrible thing to happen.

    Dr.Devine

    I know, Right? Oh well.
Perhaps we should draft a eulogy.

    nyoki

Alas poor Yuric…I knew him Horatio…wait, this is not him! Who is this?!

    Luke Magnifico

    It’s you.

    You, from the future.

    nyoki

    Oh shit. I’m fucked.
