I’m about as liberal douchebag as you get, but even I feel obliged to point out Osama Bin laden is more wealthy than just about everyone on this site. Same goes for all the fundamentalist religious leaders in the middle east… they abuse the poor for their own ends, but they’re hardly poor themselves. Thia little quote is a truism.

Wealth is relative. He has the wealth (or his organization does) that he stage terrorist attacks, but he lives in hiding in caves or moving constantly between villages in a 3rd world tribal area. As much as I’d like to kill that sunnofabitch a thousand times over, he is no rich man living it up while others die. He is hardcore, which is why we haven’t gotten him (Saddam? Now he was a rich fat bastard, no wonder we caught him so easy).
I’m still not sure how anything thus said above has anything to do with the liberal/conservative divide. Maybe that the liberals acknowledge that the situation that DullMentalRacket talks about, and the fact that the west supports some of the religious leaders (in Saudi Arabia), or supported the non-religious leaders that did the exact same thing (the Shah of Iran), that it is easy for malcontent leaders to use the west, and America in particular, as scapegoats for the fanatics in the middle east who are venting their collective frustration at the world basically leaving them out of the prosperity of the 20th and 21st centuries, while at the same time exploiting their natural resources by making exclusive deals with elites who give none of it to building the infrastructure and prosperity of their nation as a whole.
So liberals admit we are being hoisted on our own petards, but offer no easy solutions, Conservatives pretend it’s all some onerous outsider’s completely unprovoked animosity is to blame, and offer simple-minded solutions that don’t work. So either way we’re screwed.

But yes, war is good for business. That’s why I always say that with situations like the west vs. middle eastern fanatics, or Israelis vs. Palestinians, or Russians vs. Chechians, or pick your continuous conflict: there are too many people with too much power who gain too much personally from the status quo.

They’re not being silenced, they’re being rated. All that happens as a result is that you have to click to see the comment. It’s still there, anyone can see it; a lot of them don’t like it apparently. It’s not as if they get voted off the site or anything.

It is frustrating. Bush’s administration did so many things that outraged me, then Obama comes in, does most of the same things (for mostly the same reasons) and those that screamed at Bush will not scream at Obama. They think they’re speaking truth to power, but they’re just yammering to the north wind, and he ain’t listening.
I will say that I like Obama much more than Bush, but that’s mostly because Bush was an idiot and Obama can give good speech.
You and I disagree on nearly everything politically and yet can debate and respect each other. When did that stop being the case in Congress and the Senate? They’re supposed to keep the peace while getting things done.

Actually, war and terrorism cannot be compared as they are here. War is an action, terrorism is a method. Terrorists can wage war, as they are doing now in Afghanistan, and soldiers in a war can become terrorists whenever they deviate from their mission (if their mission is benevolent) and commit war crimes or if the war they are waging itself has malevolent intentions. Most importantly, while both terrorism and war share some dark elements, mainly destruction, chaos and the death of many innocents and good people, war is different in one very important way: one of the sides might be doing the right thing, such as defending their country from invaders, or ending a cruel and oppressive regime. Bottom line: terrorism is 100% evil, and war is only as evil as the people waging it are.
