Stargate: The Ark of Truth review

51lvQuNdaHL Stargate: The Ark of Truth

The Stargate SG-1 team travels to the ruins of Dakara to find the fabled Ark of Truth. Built by the Alterans, (builders of the Stargates) millions of years before, this ancient artifact may be the sole means remaining to defeat the Ori armies.

After my recent time travel movie experience with the SG-1 team, I chose my next SG-1 adventure somewhat more carefully. I had fully forgotten about the Ori though, and that their queen bee was no one else but Morena Baccarin. It was a pleasant trip down memory lane.

  • Stargate: Continuum review

    51I1KjNS1L Stargate: Continuum

An elite military unit (SG-1) must flee back to Earth when two members of their team inexplicably disappear into thin air. But they return to a world in which the Stargate – an Ancient device which allows them to travel to hundreds of planets – was never discovered, and their own history has been erased. Now they must convince a dubious government and military that the timeline was altered by a powerful Alien enemy (Ba’al) in order to conquer Earth, and time is not on their side…

I got a hankerin for some Stargate : SG1 over the weekend, so I brought this out out of containment, didn’t even bother to read the back of the box. I regret doing that, because as I DO like the cast of SG-1 (yes, even the second team), I strongly dislike pretty much every time travel story that I’ve run into over the last 15 years.

This one was no different, and it was obvious that much of the time travel stuff was done so they could save on set budgets. Somewhat enjoyable, but bleh to the time travel.

    High-Rise review

    81Vy3obfjpL. SL1500 896x1024 High Rise

Tom Hiddleston stars as Dr. Laing, resident in a high-tech skyscraper which places him amongst the upper class. Life seems like paradise. But, as building flaws emerge the social strata begins to crumble and the building descends into a class war. –Amazon

Some very disappointing stuff in this movie. It has all the elements of a great film, but somehow threw them all over the place in the most random order possible, with some major pacing, story elements and design issues that make no sense to me at all. Hiddleston is supposed to be playing a character that’s lower/middle class that somehow gets elevated to the upper class. There’s violence, tall buildings, parties, Jeremy Irons, sex, rape, murder, and all sorts of pandemonium that unfortunately seemed more for titillation than for story telling. I was hoping for a “Mad Max / The Raid” type of movie and got something less than either of those movies ever sunk to. Skip it unless you want to see Hiddleston nakes, which was actually worth the price of admission for me ?
