Quatermass And The Pit

Professor Bernard Quatermass, embodied here by Scottish actor Andrew Keir is a scientist entirely composed of tweed and anger. And the more angry he becomes, the more Scottish he gets. Fascinatingly, the basic concept is the same as 2001: A Space Odyssey, except in the original short story The Sentinel there are no ancient astronauts messing about with early humanity and the course of civilization, but there are in the original tv series by Nigel Kneale, written before The Sentinel grew arms and legs and became something much, much bigger. A coincidence? I think not. Government conspiracies, the supernatural, alien invasion (and an alien autopsy!); no wonder Chris Carter approached Kneale to write for The X Files. Burned by Hollywood, he turned him down, but we can dream…

Ok. I take it all back. Arthur C Clarke probably didn’t steal the idea of ancient astronauts meddling with humanity and civilization from Nigel Kneale. There’s at least a 4 year gap between Encounter and The Pit. I think it’s probably a case of unconscious cross fertilization. They were both original, ground breaking writers who didn’t need to plagiarize.

The Maze Runner (Book 1) review

91d ylbqUIL The Maze Runner (Book 1)

If you ain’t scared, you ain’t human.

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his name. He’s surrounded by strangers—boys whose memories are also gone.

Nice to meet ya, shank. Welcome to the Glade.

Outside the towering stone walls that surround the Glade is a limitless, ever-changing maze. It’s the only way out—and no one’s ever made it through alive.

    Everything is going to change.

Then a girl arrives. The first girl ever. And the message she delivers is terrifying.

    Remember. Survive. Run.

As with most books that were later adapted to movies, this story is much more indepth and fleshed out than it’s silver screen version, with MUCH more backstory on WICKD and what’s going on in the world outside of the maze. That being said, the movie had absolutely nothing about what was going on until the last 15 seconds, and even then it was a confusing mess of wtf. This book was a decent read, much easier to follow along with than The Hunger Games, and I’m happy they seem to be doing well as movies.

The Search for General Tso review

51RH0fgWJOL. SX940 The Search for General Tso

This mouthwateringly entertaining documentary traces the surprising origins of the iconic Chinese-American dish, from Shanghai to Middle America and beyond.

    Source : Amazon Video
    Directed by: Ian Cheney

They very quickly get to the point, we know who General Tso is, we know how to properly spell his name, and we know where he’s from. The story behind the meal is so much more than just about food though, as they go through the last hundred years of the Chinese Immigrant’s experience in America. From Chop Suey to Cashew Chicken to the famously unchinese Chinese fortune cookies, they explore how the Chinese have become a part of Americana. Good enough of a movie that I was forced to order out for some Chinese food afterwards (though getting my standard bourbon chicken in lieu of anything mentioned in the movie.  This was a good documentary with some serious heart to it and pulled on some definitive heart strings in the third act when discussing the meal with a chef of import.
