The Last Emperox
The Last Emperox is the thrilling conclusion to the award-winning, New York Times and USA Today bestselling Interdependency series, an epic space opera adventure from Hugo Award-winning author John Scalzi.
The collapse of The Flow, the interstellar pathway between the planets of the Interdependency, has accelerated. Entire star systems–and billions of people–are becoming cut off from the rest of human civilization. This collapse was foretold through scientific prediction . . . and yet, even as the evidence is obvious and insurmountable, many still try to rationalize, delay and profit from, these final days of one of the greatest empires humanity has ever known.
Emperox Grayland II has finally wrested control of her empire from those who oppose her and who deny the reality of this collapse. But “control” is a slippery thing, and even as Grayland strives to save as many of her people form impoverished isolation, the forces opposing her rule will make a final, desperate push to topple her from her throne and power, by any means necessary. Grayland and her thinning list of allies must use every tool at their disposal to save themselves, and all of humanity. And yet it may not be enough.
Will Grayland become the savior of her civilization . . . or the last emperox to wear the crown?

John Scalzi is hands down my favorite author, but if I were to make any suggestion to him, it’s to never apologize for something that no one knows happened, because then they’ll know it happened and think about that one unforgivable thing as the reason that ‘everything’ went wrong. I’m being severely hyperbolic here, but only just barely. “The Last Emperox” is the third and final book in a series with the end of literally everything that the universe knows about “The Flow” which is how everyone in this universe gets around the limits of light speed.
It’s a good book, but dang if that final act of the book is wrapped up awfully and unexpectedly quick with some story choices that I wouldn’t personally have made, but were interesting nonetheless. I fully expect that the quick ending had everything to do with the apology that Scalzi made in the afterward / acknowledgements with his procrastination. Additionally, I fully expect that the final part of this book could be made into an entire series of books and has a faint whiff of sequel hints that I’ve grown to dislike so much.
Honestly, if there is a sequel, I’ll preorder the signed edition again because even a less than perfect Scalzi novel is dependably enjoyable.

Doctor Sleep

As i mentioned in my review of ‘The Shining’, I had no clue that the original story was supernatural in nature, so seeing the trailers of ‘Doctor Sleep’ really confused me and prompted some soul searching on google to see what I was missing.
I’m happy with the direction that Mike Flanagan ultimately took the film, there was plenty of room to make this a gimmicky sequel, but there was never a time that I felt like anyone was elbowing me in the ribs to show me that this was, in fact, a sequel to a very popular movie.
Ford v Ferrari
Fantastic acting with a horrifyingly good story. The cars are amazing and everything I love about them is here, but holy moly they’re small little things, aren’t they?
Comment Karma has been updated on author pages
I’m happy to report that just a few short years after adding a new comment karma system, the numbers are now showing as you’d expect them to on your author pages.
Here’s mine: www.myconfinedspace.com/author/tiki-god/
My number went up about 700 points when I got the math working right there, so maybe you too have more karma?

Emma

I wasn’t expecting to enjoy “Emma.” as much as I did, and only watched it because my wife was head over heels excited about seeing it. There’s a strength of story that really kicks in about 20 minutes into the film, but you really have to paying attention to the whole thing or later plot points and conversations are going to make absolutely no sense, so put down the phone or laptop and give it your full attention.
The Shining

I hate to admit this, but I’d never seen this film before. I’m a Stanley Kubrick fan, I’m a fan of Jack Nicholson, and Steven King’s adapted stories are usually pretty good, but from what I knew of the movie, it was just about a guy going crazy up in the snow capped mountains. I was under that false assumption until it’s sequel was released and the trailers made no sense to me. I mentioned this to my wife and she set me straight. It’s a fantastic movie and definitely changes how I view “Ready Player One” a little bit. Maybe I’ll go back and re-watch that to see what I missed.

Midway
Tags:Movie Posters, Movie Reviews, Movies
I went in fully expecting this to be a mess of a movie with inaccuracies and oddly inserted love stories, but what I got was a heartfelt, well done, and mostly true retelling of the Midway confrontation during WW2. Because they didn’t stray too far from the truth, the actual Midway battle only gets started about an hour into the film, there’s just too much that has to be set up before the battle can take place.
There’s an unfortunate amount of noticeable CGI in the film, but other than a couple weirdly phrased lines (“There’s the man that tried to warn us all of the attack!”), this is a fantastic movie.
Jurassic Park
Before seeing Jurassic World film this June read the original, multimillion copy No. 1 bestselling thriller that inspired the first major motion picture Jurassic Park.
On a remote jungle island, genetic engineers have created a dinosaur game park.
An astonishing technique for recovering and cloning dinosaur DNA has been discovered. Now one of mankind’s most thrilling fantasies has come true and the first dinosaurs that the Earth has seen in the time of man emerge.
But, as always, there is a dark side to the fantasy and after a catastrophe destroys the park’s defence systems, the scientists and tourists are left fighting for survival…
With this masterful cross of science fiction and action-adventure, Michael Crichton created one of the biggest bestsellers of all time, turned by Steven Spielberg into the highest grossing blockbuster ever in 1993.
Currently $1.99 on amazon! I haven’t read this in many many years, but I remember enjoying it.
I’ve purchased a copy for myself, so you’ll see a review from me one day for the book 🙂

The Human Tornado
About what you would expect from a Rudy Ray Moore flick, entertainingly low budgets with one repeated scene that cracked me up, which is when they were “doing it” in bed and somehow broke the ceiling and made if fall down again.

The Shining
Before Doctor Sleep, there was The Shining, a classic of modern American horror from the undisputed master, Stephen King.
Danny is only five years old, but in the words of old Mr Hallorann he is a ‘shiner’, aglow with psychic voltage. When his father becomes caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, Danny’s visions grow out of control.
As winter closes in and blizzards cut them off, the hotel seems to develop a life of its own. It is meant to be empty. So who is the lady in Room 217 and who are the masked guests going up and down in the elevator? And why do the hedges shaped like animals seem so alive?
Somewhere, somehow, there is an evil force in the hotel – and that, too, is beginning to shine . . .
Currently $2.99 on Amazon.com, I’ve not read this one yet, but I’ve seen the movie (and the movie of the sequel) but I’m told that there’s a bit of a different between the books and the movies.
