  • Jojo Rabbit

Directed by Taika Waititi. With Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, Scarlett Johansson, Taika Waititi. A young boy in Hitler’s army finds out his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.

The trailers and commentary about this movie before it was released seemed worried about the comedy and softening of Hitler, but what the movie turned out to be was so much more than I was expecting. Sure, Hitler is here, as played by Taika Waititi, but he’s what a 10 year old boy would imagine him to be. WW2 is happening in the background, but I’d argue that the war itself is less important than the family dynamic that’s happening with Jojo, his mom, the hidden Jewish friend, and Sam Rockwell’s character, all of them played straight, sometimes to a fault. The only one not being serious here is Rebel Wilson, who has some fantastic scenes that cracked me up.

Star Trek Discovery The Way to the Stars

An original novel based on the explosive new TV series Star Trek: Discovery!

Despite being an inexperienced Starfleet cadet, Sylvia Tilly became essential to the U.S.S. Discovery finding its way back home from the Mirror Universe. But how did she find that courage? From where did she get that steel? Who nurtured that spark of brilliance? The Way to the Stars recounts for fans everywhere the untold story of Tilly’s past.

It’s not easy being sixteen, especially when everyone expects great things from Tilly. It’s even harder when her mother and father are Federation luminaries, not to mention pressing her to attend one of the best schools that the Federation has to offer. Tilly wants to achieve great things-even though she hasn’t quite worked out how to do that or what it is she wants to do. But this year, everything will change for Tilly, as she about to embark upon the adventure of a lifetime-an adventure that will take her ever closer to the stars..

A good book that I ultimately did not care for, but I’m not going to hold that against the author. I went in hoping for Star Trek action and adventure but instead got a coming of age story of a 16 year old girl that has inattentive parents. It was a fun story, but ultimate had nothing to do with Trek at all.

  • BIKINI

    2050

Directed by Princeton Holt. With Dean Cain, Stormi Maya, Stefanie Bloom, Devin Fuller. A family man struggling to hold it all together discovers a hidden parlor that offers a solution…sexbots.

A movie about sex robots that ultimately has nothing to do with sex robots, but more to do with how to be truthful to yourself and how to be truthful to those around you. There’s some awkward points in the film with some scenes that just felt like the b-team was doing the editing, but I appreciated it for what they were trying to say.

    Rambo Last Blood

Directed by Adrian Grunberg. With Sylvester Stallone, Paz Vega, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Adriana Barraza. Rambo must confront his past and unearth his ruthless combat skills to exact revenge in a final mission.

Is this it? The Final Rambo Movie?

Maybe, but at this point Stallone could be using a walker and still give a good performance as a conflicted vet who just wants to live his life and be respected by the people around him. “Last Blood” is more torture porn like the previous film, but it wears that badge proudly.

    Color Out of Space

Directed by Richard Stanley. With Nicolas Cage, Joely Richardson, Madeleine Arthur, Elliot Knight. A secluded farm is struck by a strange meteorite which has apocalyptic consequences for the family living there and possibly the world.

Adapted from a Lovecraft story, so you know that there’s going to be some real mind breaking storypoints and that by the end of the story pretty much everyone involved is going to be dead, dying, or in an insane asylum. That all holds to be true here, with some really impressive visuals to boot. I was also impressed with the sound design and score too.

It has Nicolas Cage acting crazy, which is the best kind of Nicolas Cage acting.

    Contagion

Directed by Steven Soderbergh. With Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow. Healthcare professionals, government officials and everyday people find themselves in the midst of a worldwide epidemic as the CDC works to find a cure.

I feel like I’ve seen this before, which is likely considering the cast, but I didn’t remember much about it , it was released before I was logging movies, and with the novel corona virus tearing through the world….

This is a good movie. It’s scary as shit, but it’s good. I could actually see this moving being a prequel to games like The Division or The Division 2.
