Not only could you smell them, there was a steady ca-chunk ca-chunk sound when someone was making copies & these old gestetner prints were warm off the press & would bleed some ink or toner or whatever it was they used on your fingers when the were fresh. Maybe if you used too much dunno.  Memories of elementary school.
