The Culture – a human/machine symbiotic society – has thrown up many great Game Players, and one of the greatest is Gurgeh. Jernau Morat Gurgeh. The Player of Games. Master of every board, computer and strategy. Bored with success, Gurgeh travels to the Empire of Azad, cruel and incredibly wealthy, to try their fabulous game…a game so complex, so like life itself, that the winner becomes emperor. Mocked, blackmailed, almost murdered, Gurgeh accepts the game, and with it the challenge of his life – and very possibly his death.

Easy to get through, but it had a pretty heavy ending. I enjoyed the story and the pacing, though there’s a few things that I would like to learn more about The Culture, I’m sure they’ll come to light in future books.

You’re a lucky bastard, just getting started on the Culture novels. Banks was a brilliant writer and you are in for a treat!

9 more books in the series, you started with #2 and I just finished #3. Like the first three well enough. Third was probably the strongest so far, tho kind of ghoulish. The next three aren’t on kindle so I’m ordering used paperbacks.
