The novel is set in the distant future, when humans have spread through the galaxy, physically and virtually. We are not alone; we have created a race of AIs, the Superbrights, to administer and expand the virtual side of our presence in the Milky Way. Oshi Adjani works for a Superbright, traveling to worlds where her Boss cannot go, and solving the problems he has set her. One success reveals a secret of the Superbrights, so the Boss forces her into one last, deadly mission, with her freedom as her reward for doing the impossible.

Pretty boring and unevenly paced, I expected more from Stross. It was good enough to finish, but not good enough to actually recommend. There’s some interesting concepts in the book, they’re just not really explored effectively.

Crap. I hope Stross isn’t losing his touch. He’s one of the guys I always loved. Someday, I hope to be as good a writer as he is.

I read quite a lot and almost only scifi so I may give some of his newer work a shot. I looked this one up and it seems this is an older story of his and may be the reason why it comes across as so drab. Either way, I’ll add him to my list to check out. I have about 30 or 40 books ahead of him right now though.
