    Traveling up or down a sufficiently steep incline the amount of friction that can be generated by the wheels is insufficient to start or stop the train in any one direction of travel. Each turn both increases the friction applied and redirects the momentum of the train in an effort to effectively reduce the incline on which any particular part of the train is, allowing it’s limited acceleration capability to be manage the required start or stop.
