Maybe the helmet is because she was smart enough to take into consideration that there are baseballs flying around. And that one could potentially strike her child.

One problem: that’s not a helmet. See that big open space on top? The one that exposes the soft spot on an infant’s skull?

its a helmet for keeping an infants skull from developing a flat spot from sleeping. Babies are put to sleep on their backs to avoid sudden infant death syndrome, but this increases the possibility if having a flat spot on the skull. Thus the helmet.

She probably has it on him with the intent of extra protection.

Those helmets are because a kid has a flat head (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_head_syndrome). They have to wear them 23 hours a day, every day until their head doesn’t have the flat spot anymore. Nice because it offers extra protection, then annoying once kid doesn’t need them anymore since they’ve gotten used to have the extra padding.
