Artist Jan Fabre spent four months (with his 29 assistants) gluing 1.6 Million Buprestidae beetles on the ceiling of the Royal Palace in Brussels to create the Heaven of Delight.

Jan Fabre says he began with smaller projects and surfaces to see what him and his team could come up with and the result is this very unusual ceiling decor.

Since beetles are a non-protected species, it was easy for Jan and his team to gather the jeweled beetles from universities and countries like Thailand where beetles are considered a delicacy.

    1. This is beautiful for some reason. A dress made of those bugs would be nice. You could wear it and every time you hug someone SPLASH bug intestines in yo face.

the green dress on that site is an artwork of the same artist and is called: “Mur de la montée des anges” (1993). It consists of these bugs. Happy wearing, although I believe that only the “Deckflügel” (I don`t know how to call them in English), the upper wings and not the entire bug is used, and as insects` wings are really slow to decompost, this dress may actually last a while.

      lovely….

wonder what they did to make it hold up over time. The bodies I mean, you’d think they would dry out and fall apart…..

      Awesome pics.

I saw this in person 3 weeks ago. And drank lots of beer (Brussels Beer Weekend truly rocks).

There is also a 2 meter ball covered in the same bugs in the fine arts museum (about 1 block from the royal residence) and the ball is at floor level, so you get a much closer look at the bugs.

      Which are very cool.
