This is probably way too deep, but i think religion may be the only reason I aspire to do good – thinking that I will be rewarded for my prudence in the next life. Now I despise religion because of all the pain and misery it’s caused in the hands of governments and the fearful ignorant. But I wonder if i would have been so keen on compassion and ethics if i wasn’t taught about Jesus. I think perhaps teaching people about the reward is the reason they feel like doing good. Rewards of a pleasant society in this life. Teaching people about Jesus AND Gandhi AND Buddha and the miracles of compassion and forgiveness in our world. Moral certainty is a myth, but i believe people need an incentive to choose ethics over greed.
