The liger is a hybrid cross between a male lion and a female tiger (not to be confused with a tigon). It is the largest of all cats and extant felines.

If I remember correctly, they get so large because the male lion passes on a gene that encourages growth, while the lioness passes on one that controls growth. The female tiger doesn’t have a growth-inhibiting gene, so ligers just get huge.
