Ironworking from meteoric iron has gone on in Africa since about 2500 BC and iron smelting was roughly contemporaneous with the Middle East, somewhere between 2000 and 1500 BC – predating the discovery of iron in Europe. Copper smelting in the region is even older, dated at between 2500 and 3000 BC.
Can’t be bothered looking for the references but so many empires grew and fell in Africa before we poor white slobs ever amounted to anything noteworthy. Africa is likely where much of domestication and agriculture was started.
Still, he lived in a far less informed day and in a culture which truly thought that the colour of a person’s skin or their gender actually had some impact on their worth as a human.
It also presupposes that technology is superior to a simple life – it may simply be that the African tribesmen felt no need for such trivialities.
A diamond is, in reality, just a rock. It’s value comes from the desire of men to have it. If you have no need of shiny rocks, it’s just another pebble in the dirt.
And there you have it. Really, they didn’t need all the extra ‘crap’ that became what we so prize today. And honestly, how many people today wish that they could walk around for an hour or two, and have all that they need for the day or even week? But we are stuck working 40+ hours a week, if we can get work, and are up to our necks in debt. Until the climate change, I think they had the better lives. Though with the changes long ago, the over population, and hooking them on our consuming life style, its started to really suck for the folks over there.
I’m not an accomplished farmer or outdoorsman (so correct me if I’m wrong here), but living off the land is probably more taxing than working most 9 to 5 jobs that we have today. Also, it’s probably more than 40 hours a week.

Even if this was him saying it, it doesn’t affect his idea or his science.
And it doesn’t make the statement less true…

So much for the axe/spear/arrowhead argument.
Also, no domesticable animals, few useful plants…
