“Superman & Lois Season 3” Review

Superman & Lois: Created by Todd Helbing, Greg Berlanti. With Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Alex Garfin, Erik Valdez. The world’s most famous superhero and comic books’ most famous journalist face the pressures and complexities that come with balancing work, justice, and parenthood in today’s society.

In an ongoing effort to catch up on my television watchin’ from my time in school, Season 3 of “Superman & Lois” was a frustrating slog to get through, There’s no fault to be had in any of the performances, Tyler Hoechlin is still a great Superman, Elizabeth Tullock is about a perfect Lois Lane as we’re ever going to get, and the supporting cast is still aces in my humble opinion. There’s some obvious budget cuts to the show with fewer super-antics and more angst inspired by real life topics li cancer, getting a double mastectomy, and recovering from chemotherapy. Add to all this, Jordan Elsass, the actor who played the non-powered son of Superman, left acting to pursue mental health wellness, so the first few episodes for me were getting to know the new version of the character, now played by Michael Bishop. Both actors are great in the roles, but there’s always going to be a slightly different take and it’s noticeable and takes me right out of the experience. I would honestly have preferred they send him off to Metropolis and maybe have him on the phone every now and then.

The rest of the season is filled out with the delicious deviousness of Bruno Mannheim as played by Chad Coleman, who gives me the impression of one of those types of weight lifters that look like they’re fat dudes wearing a jacket, but then it turns out they can deadlift a thousand pounds. I’m a huge fan of the storyline with the families of Mannheim and John Henry Irons and wish we had more of that instead of the way too close to home storyline of people getting cancer and having to amputate large parts of their bodies to survive it.

“Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One” Review

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One: Directed by Jeff Wamester. With Matt Bomer, Jensen Ackles, Darren Criss, Meg Donnelly. The Anti-Monitor (the Monitor’s evil counterpart) is released in the DC Multiverse and begins to destroy the different Earths that compose it. The Monitor attempts to recruit heroes from across the Multiverse, but is murdered.

This is definitely loosely based on the Infinite Crisis books from the 80s and it definitely has some big names doing the voice work, but I never could find a way to get into the story in a way that felt enjoyable. Lots of familiar characters on the screen though, so if you’ve ever wanted to see the Question questioning things, here’s your chance.

  • “Echo” Review

Echo: With Alaqua Cox, Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Graham Greene. Maya Lopez must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.

The latest and greatest from the MCU, this time it’s the sorta villain from the “Hawkeye” show that gets to launch the new “Marvel Spotlight” sub brand from MCU content and only time will tell what that branding actually means. The first series is a good one with just 5 episodes with a total run time of about 4 hours, which is fantastic to see. Going all the way back to the Netflix days the seasons of the various MCU shows have meandered for about half the season with unfulfilling fluff filling out the contracted time.

My one complaint is that the completely unrelated “What If” series that just wrapped up over Christmas also featured a Native American superhero with blue powers from her ancestors. I’m happy to see more new faces in the MCU, but the possible connections between the two situations was in the back of my head the entire series. No spoilers, but you can safely assume they are not related at all and it’s just a happy coincidence that they look and feel similar.

    “What If…? Season 2” Review

What If…?: With Jeffrey Wright, Terri Douglas, Matthew Wood, Robin Atkin Downes. Exploring pivotal moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and turning them on their head, leading the audience into uncharted territory.

This is some of the best content from Marvel in the last few years, from the great music, to the fantastic action, to stories and new characters that are both captivating and have a strong future in the franchise. It’s a shame that the the best stuff is animated, but at least we’re getting great stuff still.
