    “Predator: Badlands” Review

Predator: Badlands: Directed by Dan Trachtenberg. With Reuben de Jong, Cameron Brown, Elle Fanning, Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. A young Predator outcast from his clan finds an unlikely ally on his journey in search of the ultimate adversary.

I’ve very happy with the direction that the Alien/Predator franchise(s?) are going and Predator: Badlands just re-enforces that opinion. There’re a very limited cast here, I think we see only maybe 4 or 5 actors in the entire film, but the surprisingly (sorta spoiler) thing is that there isn’t a single human in the whole film. All we see are Predators, Human Synths, and a few natives of the DEATH PLANET that the majority of the action takes place on. It’s a brave choice and one that worked out in my humble opinion.

Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigations: The Collectors

The dedicated agents of the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations have their work cut out for them protecting the course of history from the dangers of time travel. But the galaxy is littered with artifacts that, in the wrong hands, could threaten reality. One of the DTI’s most crucial jobs is to track down these objects and lock them safely away in the Federation’s most secret and secure facility. When Agents Lucsly and Dulmur bring home an alien obelisk of incredible power, they are challenged by a 31st-century temporal agent who insists they surrender the mysterious artifact to her. But before they know it, the three agents are pulled into a corrupted future torn apart by a violent temporal war. While their DTI colleagues attempt to track them down, Lucsly and Dulmur must restore temporal peace by setting off on an epic journey through the ages, with the future of the galaxy hanging in the balance…

There’s a fun conceit with the Department of Temporal Investigations, in that the members of the Department in the time period that TNG/DS9/VOY exist in aren’t permitted to time travel. It’s technology they now about and know how dangerous it can be, but it’s just not permitted until a certain amount of time has passed and the galaxy is more mature. Turns out though, that with every rule there is an exception and “The Collectors” is a fun example of one of those exceptions. There’s a couple Jurassic Park sized story elements that I thought were overly goofy, but they worked for what they were.

  • “Gen V” Season 2 Review

Gen V: Created by Craig Rosenberg, Evan Goldberg, Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen. With Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, London Thor. From the world of “The Boys” comes “Gen V,” which explores the first generation of superheroes to know that their super powers are from Compound V. These heroes put their physical and moral boundaries to the test competing for the school’s top ranking.

Gen V works best when it’s not tied up with it’s older sibling “The Boys”, but this second season is pretty great, even with the couple of tie in episodes that weigh it down to it’s much more serious and somber predecessor. I think there’s definitely much less sexual violence this time around, perhaps the producers got the memo that people weren’t enjoying it as much as they were hoping?

Regardless, I enjoyed the journey of this season, there were some great story elements that really surprised me with their resolutions.
