Chappie review
In the near future, crime is monitored by an oppressive mechanized police force. But now, the people are fighting back. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. As powerful and destructive forces start to see Chappie as a danger to mankind and order, they will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo and ensure that Chappie is the last of his kind.

I was perfectly happy to let this one go unwatched, the director’s last two films felt like they were missing something essential and were heavy handed in their social commentary. Also, who need yet another movie about robots (or AI) that come to life and take part in shenanigans? It was until a recent reddit thread talking about the film that I found out what it’s really about: Die Antwoord find s arobot and Hugh Jackman wears mom shorts. Throw in some way over the top acting by Jackman and some excellent cgi / bodysuit work for the Chappie character, all set to a Die Antwoord set selection, and you get a pretty good result. Also, someone obviously had a heart to heart with Neill Blomkamp, because there were several opportunity for “Chappie” to go off the same rails that his previous film have, but luckily he was smart enough to guide the film to a more reasonable path.

I finished this a couple weeks ago, the pirate ship stuff was awesome, the AC story stuff was crap. utter disappointment, but happy to find out that I’m still not interested in any of the other AC games.

Ex Machina review
Alex Garland, writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine, makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, EX MACHINA. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test–charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated–and more deceptive–than the two men could have imagined.

A brutally uncomfortable movie when the twist happens, why in the world people liked this film is beyond me, it’s only half cooked and is a retread of some fairly mundane science fiction tropes.
Sure was pretty though, would love to live in that part of the world with that kind of apparent internet connection, but sadly I’m no Bill Gates x100, which is what the main protagonist in this one was. What’s a few hundred billion dollars though, right?

Goldfinger review
To own Goldfinger (1964) on digital video disc is to have at your fingertips the proof that Sean Connery is the definitive James Bond. Dry as ice, dripping with deadpan witticisms, only Connery’s Bond would dare disparage the Beatles, that other 1964 phenomenon. No one but Connery can believably seduce women so effortlessly, kill with almost as much ease, and then pull another bottle of Dom Perignon ’53 out of the fridge. Goldfinger contains many of the most memorable scenes in the Bond series: gorgeous Shirley Eaton (as Jill Masterson) coated in gold paint by evil Auric Goldfinger and deposited in Bond’s bed; silent Oddjob, flipping a razor-sharp derby like a Frisbee to sever heads; our hero spread-eagle on a table while a laser beam moves threateningly toward his crotch. Honor Blackman’s Pussy Galore is the prototype for the series’ rash of man-hating supermodels. And Desmond Llewelyn makes his first appearance as Q, giving Bond what is still his most impressive car, a snazzy little number that fires off smoke screens, punctures the tires of vehicles on the chase, and boasts a handy ejector seat. Goldfinger‘s two climaxes, inside Fort Knox and aboard a private plane, have to be seen to be believed. –Raphael Shargel
