  • Minions review

The Minions, breakout stars from “Despicable Me,” are presented in an origin story that showcases their unpredictable personality and physicality, and pairs them with equally memorable human characters. As it turns out, Minions have existed since the beginning of time. They have evolved from single (yellow) cell organisms into the familiar beings we know, and they live for a collective purpose: to seek out and serve the most despicable master they can find. Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock will lead the voice cast of the human characters as Scarlett Overkill, the world’s reigning super-villain of the 1960s.

The Minions without Gru? Turns out that it’s not that good of an idea, kinda like a jam sandwich without any peanut butter, or a comedy without a straight man.  Too much saccharine over the top comedy and not enough down to Earth reactions that a normal person would relate with.  Also, Sandra Bullock does a fine job as Scarlett Overkill, but she’s famous enough to me that I was hearing Sandra Bullock and not the cartoon character she was playing.  A good film to have on in the background, but it’s not going to capture your attention if you’re over 8 years old.

    Trainwreck review

In Trainwreck UNRATED, Amy (Amy Schumer) enjoys a life free from stifling romantic commitment until she accidentally falls for the subject of a new article she’s writing.

    Directed by: Judd Apatow

I feel like I should have liked this more than I did. I enjoy Amy Shumer’s comedy usually, and I usually like Judd Apatow’s movies, but this one felt flat and somewhat unentertaining at points, which I guess is better than being fat and unentertaining, right? While I’ve never really bought into Shumer’s insistence that she’s one of the ugly girls that has trouble with men, she plays the role pretty well in Trainwreck. Honestly though, I could have done with more John Cena and less Bill Hader. The few scenes that Cena was in were truly humorous, more so than the rest of the film.

Hunters in the Dark (HALO) review

51ag2 oxh6L Hunters in the Dark (HALO)

It is 2555, more than two years after the Master Chief went missing-in-action following a decisive conflict on Installation 00—the massive, extragalactic Forerunner construct known as the Ark—as part of the final chapter in humanity’s bloody thirty-year struggle against the overwhelming forces of the Covenant. Now, as a tenuous peace exists between the humans and the Elites, a startling scientific discovery is made…and the riddle behind its Forerunner origins could very well seal the fate of the entire galaxy within a matter of weeks. In order to unravel these dangerous secrets, a heroic, hastily formed coalition of humans and Elites must attempt to overcome their differences as they embark on a covert mission back to the Ark—an astonishing, enigmatic place beyond comprehension from which few have returned and where mortal danger awaits them all…

I unfortunately read this after playing through Halo 5’s campaign, which I should have known better.  343 has decided for some inexplicable reason to have critical parts of their game’s campaign story included in the books with no indication that “hey you idiot, you should read this book before playing that game”. That’s not to say that the story here was bad in any way at all, I don’t think Peter David could ever write a bad story, it’s the corporate task masters that are at fault here.

The story is set primarily on the Ark that was last seen in Halo 3.  There’s some pretty crazy stuff that goes down, but David does a great job at fleshing out how difficult it was to shift focus for the ex-covenant and human soldiers from being mortal enemies to being wary compatriots.  I’m happy with it’s resolution, as it wraps up all the threads that anyone may care about, but at the same time, leaves it open for David to come back to the Halo universe, which I would welcome greatly.

    Killing baby Hitler

Jeb Bush has just said, “Hell yeah I’d kill baby Hitler!” when asked if he could travel back in time, would he kill baby Hitler. But what about all the other evil babies throughout history? Someone called UglyPaulRudd on twitter has the answers.
