Tina Louise is fantastic in this film, as is the film itself. Louise was actually a ‘Method’ actor who studied with Lee Strasberg of The Actors Studio. She’s a strange paradox. An actor who actively participated in her own public image as a sex symbol, but who longed to be taken seriously as an artist.

Before the Oscar winning Son Of Saul, there was actor/writer/director Tim Blake Nelson’s The Grey Zone. It was released the same year as the Oscar garlanded The Pianist. He alienated many people by making it including Joel Coen (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) who begged him not to transfer his off Broadway play onto film. There’s a moral debate about whether dramatic representations of The Holocaust are ever justifiable. Stanley Kubrick struggled with this question and eventually gave up under the weight of all the horror. It seems to me that the tone of The Grey Zone is very similar to Son Of Saul, but the latter is more successful overall in dealing with material that many people believe is impossible to recreate and fictionalize.
