    Sonic the Hedgehog

Directed by Jeff Fowler. With Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Jim Carrey, Tika Sumpter. After discovering a small, blue, fast hedgehog, a small-town police officer must help it defeat an evil genius who wants to do experiments on it.

I went to Sonic Burger before hand, because if I was going to have to sit through yet another failure of a video game adaptation to the movie format, I might as well have a delicious Sonic Burger in my belly. I had a Diet Coke during dinner, which definitely quenched my thirst and gave me a slight energy boost from the 42 mg of caffeine, which I was sure I would need to stay away during what I expected to be a slog of heavy handed video game references.

Turns out though, I didn’t need that energy boost, Sonic: The Movie starts off fast and never lets off the peddle, with a story that felt genuine and never felt overly pandering to the fans of a franchise that frankly needed something that would reward them for decades of aimless wandering. The only complaint that I could possibly make is that the product placement is way over the top. In fact, there’s one for Zillow in the movie that’s so over the top I straight up laughed at it for a good 30 seconds after the bit was done.

This was a good film to watch in the theater!

    Black Summer

Created by John Hyams, Karl Schaefer. With Jaime King, Justin Chu Cary, Christine Lee, Sal Velez Jr.. In the dark, early days of a zombie apocalypse, complete strangers band together to find the strength they need to survive and get back to loved ones.

Short series about the immediate events of a localized zombie outbreak. I enjoyed each episode for how myopic they were and how realistically (imho) they show what’s going on. Sure there’s some really stupid stuff with children in a highschool and the gun play in the series is straight up trash, but the rest of the series makes up for those minor problems.

    Champions Change the World

During the fallout of Civil War II, Ms. Marvel, Nova and Spider-Man quit the Avengers and strike out on their own! With Viv Vision and the Totally Awesome Hulk by their side, these young heroes are determined to change the world their own way! It starts as an idea. It becomes an ideal. But what happens when it turns into a movement one so big even the Hulk can’t stop it? And will one of the greatest X-Men of all forge a new future by their side? Welcome to the Champions, Cyclops! Unfortunately, not all of your new would-be teammates are glad to see you! COLLECTING: CHAMPIONS 1-5.

Not just vol 1, but I read the entire run.

The art was pretty solid throughout, but the story was a mess, with nearly every issue ping ponging around to the middle of events happening in other series. In fact, I think all the major character development happened in the main line spider-man or avengers books, or even the universe wide cross over mini series.

I suggest completely skipping the collection of this run. From my understanding the next run that started publishing in 2019 stays on track much better.

Beautiful water color art with a story that’s not terrible, but still felt somewhat rushed. I bought the hard cover stories and read them both back to back, which was about 3 years of comic books. I can’t even imagine having to wait month to month for the story, so I’m happy to have found it around issue 30 or so.

Check it out, now that it’s a complete story I can recommend it!
