Him on the left. They died some years ago after misreading the direction of a pyroclastic flow but the crazy bastards video taped it up until their very last moments in the name of science and stuffed the footage in a titanium box.

In this picture, he’s measuring the flow rate of the A’a flow. He place a marker on the ground as is pacing out distance to find its velocity.
They’re both in really no danger, you can out tip toe these things.

Before he died, he claimed his dream was to build a titanium canoe and float down a pahoehoe flow. Motherfucking crazies is what they were, but I respect them.

And yes, I go to a predominately geological engineering school in Colorado. I don’t know this shit for no reason.
