An assessment of “beefed up” might be age dependant. It wasn’t always this way in western airports, bus or train stations. Just Israel and some totalitarian nations. SMGs (vice little euro pistols) and cops in pairs watching arcs is a recent innovation.
Hence “beefed up”.
I would be startled to hear that someone had authorized AP ammo or expanding in a public place. Why not go all in with some explosive and incendiary? Ringing ears, actions to the rear, smoking tomato sauce and chiclets – now that would be a news interview! So ..I would put money on standard “ball”.
