51yPqSw1k0L The Mighty Thor Vol. 1: Thunder In Her Veins (The Mighty Thor (2015 2018))

When Dr. Jane Foster lifts the mystic hammer Mjolnir, she is transformed into the Goddess of Thunder, the Mighty Thor! Her enemies are many, as Asgard descends further into chaos and unrest threatens to spread throughout the Ten Realms. Yet her greatest battle is against a far more personal foe: the cancer that is killing her mortal form. When Loki steps back into Thor’s life, will it ease her troubles or only add to her pain? It’s time to find out whether the next chapter in the twisting tale of the Trickster will be one of good or evil! There’s no such question about Malekith, though, as he and his Dark Council continue to fan the flames of a looming War of Realms! Jason Aaron continues his startling saga of the mighty Thor!

Welcome to yet another Marvel #1 that drops you right into the middle of a story with no explanation on what the fuck is going on. I give up Marvel, you’re the worst.

This was a good story with great art, but I have no clue why Thor is a woman, no clue why she was in a cancer ward as a patient, on idea why Odin was killing his own wife, where the “real” Thor was. Nothing was said about who this ‘council of the realms’ is, why they’re doing what they’re doing and why in the hell Roxxon Petroleum is in league with Dark Elves that are dropping bodies into low orbit around earth. I would read the second volume to maybe find out more, but it’s not included with Prime and this experience makes me feel the $15 they’re asking for V2 is not worth it.

Also as another frustration, I read this from Kindle because it was part of my overpriced Prime account. There’s about 5 or 6 double page “splash pages” that in a normal comic books are pretty damn impressive and are absolutely fantastic, but the Kindle app doesn’t rotate the way you would expect it to, it only supports double tapping the screen and it does a pretty nift super zoom that crops all the interesting parts of the art out in favor of just the words. If you thought you’d be able to pinch and zoom, well buddy have I got some sad news for you.

In all honestly the comics I download from shady pirate sites and read through other apps give me a better experience than this crap. I’m giving up on the kindle app for comics and my next one that I try will be through the Comixology app, which is also owned by Amazon, but designed by a different team.

    A1IWXa9jIlL. SL1500 768x1024 Death Wish

When his wife (Elisabeth Shue) and daughter (Camila Morrone) are violently attacked, Dr. Paul Kersey (Bruce Willis) hunts down his family’s assailants to deliver justice. Fury and fate collide in the intense action-thriller “Death Wish.”

I remember the first trailer for this film was pretty terrible, with a doctor murdering people left and right, set to AC/DC’s “Back in Black”, which was a complete shift in tone from the original film’s rage, remorse, and thirst for inappropriate vengeance.  That song does make an appearance in the film, but luckily it’s in a relatively appropriate moment, and the film doesn’t treat the whole thing as one big joke like the first trailer did.  This is one of Willis’s better recent roles, but honestly he’s just been cashing a paycheck without much apparent investment in the stories he’s taken part in.

Batman finds his patience tested to the limit when he goes on a road trip with Harley Quinn to track down her old partner-in-crime, Poison Ivy.

I mean this in the best possible way, this movie felt like a long Batman Adventures episode with Batman voiced by the eternal voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy and Harley Quinn being voiced by Melissa Rauch who didn’t do a bad job, but she’s no Tara Strong in terms of who I recognize as the voice of Harley.

I enjoyed it and it makes me miss the Batman Adventures series. Justice League: Action is a good stand in for the time being, but ..ugh.

    71jwdd9HfLL. SL1000 The Deadly Mantis

It’s man versus insect in The Deadly Mantis, a thrilling classic from the golden age of sci-fi cinema! When a giant, thousand-ton, carnivorous praying mantis is released from its million-year slumber in the frozen Arctic, a determined commander (Craig Stevens), a paleontologist (William Hopper) and a photojournalist (Alix Talton) work together to stop its terrible path of deadly destruction. As it walks, leaps and flies towards Washington DC, the fate of a nation rests on stopping the menacing insect by any means possible.

One of those low budget monster features that doesn’t actually feature a monster until the last possible moments of the film and even then, boy howdy there’s a lot of mist. It was a fun movie but it really shows it’s age in a few ways, the first was the treatment of the only woman in the whole film, the second was the fantastical treatment of the military forces and how they were protecting America from forces unnamed (Russia!) with our mighty radar pickets.

41gHgU2b7iL The Boy On The Bridge

Once upon a time, in a land blighted by terror, there was a very clever boy.The people thought the boy could save them, so they opened their gates and sent him out into the world. To where the monsters lived.

The title has to be some kind of metaphor that I only barely get, because there’s no boy in this book (there’s a girl) and there’s no bridge (just lots of roads and nearly impassable fields). This book is a prequel to the rough around the edges zombie survival novel “The Girl With All The Gifts“, though there’s a epilogue that takes place way after the events of both books. Neither of these books are amazing enough to suggest you run out and read them, but they’re a quick enough read to add some pulpy fun to your summer if you can find them for under $3. Much more than that though and eh…..

There’s a couple other things to note that are somewhat related to this book, but only in the most remote personal tangent. On the Kindle app, instead of pages it gives you segments that you’ve completed and have left in the book, which is great unless they pad the backend of the book with a preview of a future book. I was all set to read for about an hour last night and the story ended with about 15% left of the book according to the kindle indicator, so I got about 15 minutes of reading instead of the full hour. Not the worst thing in the world, but I know they’re able to make those determinations based on the actual content of the book, after all they skip the cover, indicia and chapter list when you first open the book, surely they can just calculate to the final page of the story and not to the final page of the file.

The other and final item, I though I had actually lost the tablet that I started to read this on. I remembered taking it with me on a trip, then not seeing it all when I got back. Maybe I left it on top of the car? Maybe I left it at the bar? Maybe it was stolen? Nope, my wife had tucked it into her yarn back and found it a couple months later when she finally worked her way through the back unpacking stuff from it.

Two months to unpack! It’s a record in some ways 😉
