    Star Trek

Directed by J.J. Abrams. With Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Leonard Nimoy. The brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father’s legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful Romulan from the future creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time.

watched it again to finish out my star trek marathon that got sidetracked by a Star Wars game, every time I see this film I feel more and more that this was the right direction for the franchise to go in, but that it would be nice to have this style of bombastic space battle stuff at the same time we have the slower cerebral stuff that TNG was known for.

Star Trek The Next Generation Sketchbook The Movies Generations & First Contact

Pass the torch. Bring together the best of what has come before and the grandeur of the present to create an undreamed-of future, a radically different look. Create a new ship. Give life to mankind…

I was expecting just another art book, but this turned out to be a massive tomb of behind the scenes stories, concept art, and storyboarding. The best part of this book is that it’s a large format book and the photos inside of the ship miniatures are in extreme high resolution. One of the main draw back though was that instead of using just a single page for each image, they shot for the stars and did a double page spread that unfortunately didn’t work very well due to how the book is bound, leading to some unfortunate situations where the center focus of the photo was lost to the page split:

  • Star Trek Nemesis

Directed by Stuart Baird. With Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton. The Enterprise is diverted to the Romulan homeworld Romulus, supposedly because they want to negotiate a peace treaty. Captain Picard and his crew discover a serious threat to the Federation once Praetor Shinzon plans to attack Earth.

A nice early 90’s movie that was somehow filmed and released in 2002, so the title sequence looks super aged, the plot is super tv monster of the week, and the sacrifices have less impact that I think they should have. It’s still a fun Trek adventures, but it just felt so small compared to the massive battle scenes of First Contact or the stakes of Generations.

    Star Trek Generations

Directed by David Carson. With Patrick Stewart, William Shatner, Malcolm McDowell, Jonathan Frakes. With the help of long presumed dead Captain Kirk, Captain Picard must stop a deranged scientist willing to murder on a planetary scale in order to enter a space matrix.

I remember seeing this in the theaters and having my mind blown by nearly every aspect of it. I’m reading a book right now that goes into the design and concept art behind both this film and First Contact, so watching this again with those concepts in mind was really fun.

Star Trek IV The Voyage Home

Directed by Leonard Nimoy. With William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan. To save Earth from an alien probe, Admiral James T. Kirk and his fugitive crew go back in time to San Francisco in 1986 to retrieve the only beings who can communicate with it: humpback whales.

I’ve been collecting some old fanzines and various publications from the time that this movie came out and I’m tickled to see so many people absolutely knocking the story as being derivative and silly, which I would say is the entire point.

    Star Trek The Motion Picture

Directed by Robert Wise. With William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan. When an alien spacecraft of enormous power is spotted approaching Earth, Admiral James T. Kirk resumes command of the overhauled USS Enterprise in order to intercept it.

I’ve been doing so much work on www.startrekbookclub.com lately and buying so many magazines during the first movie’s hayday, I figured I’d give it another go. It’s still an awesome movie with long, drawn out scenes that still haven’t been matched in any Trek film since, for better or worse.

    Star Trek Discovery Die Standing

An all-new novel based upon the explosive Star Trek TV series!

No one in the history of histories has lost more than Philippa Georgiou, ruler of the Terran Empire. Forced to take refuge in the Federation’s universe, she bides her time until Section 31, a rogue spy force within Starfleet, offers her a chance to work as their agent. She has no intention of serving under anyone else, of course; her only interest is escape.

But when a young Trill, Emony Dax, discovers a powerful interstellar menace, Georgiou recognizes it as a superweapon that escaped her grasp in her own universe. Escorted by a team sent by an untrusting Federation to watch over her, the emperor journeys to a region forbidden to travelers. But will what she finds there end the threat-or give “Agent Georgiou” the means to create her old empire anew?

The USS Discovery does not appear in this book.

None of the crew from the USS Discovery make any appearances here either.

I should mention that I listened to this as an audio book from Scribd, which I have no complaints about at all, I like their system and suggest it to anyone that’s able to listen to audio books. I only did this because I was talking multiple 12 hours long car trips in a week and figured I’d have time to listen to the book, but it turned out the book was much longer than the trips we took. The narrator was very professional, but I didn’t care for the voices that they used.

The story was ok, but as I complained above, there was zero connection with Discovery, so that was bitterly disappointing to me.

Star Trek Lower Decks Season 1

Created by Mike McMahan. With Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero. The support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos, have to keep up with their duties, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies.

Back to the TNG time period, and back to animation, which we haven’t seen in over 40 years. The animation style is fantastic, the story lines are fun, and the nostalgia is appropriately used in a way that doesn’t feel pandering at all, unlike DISCO or Picard.

These are short episodes that are easily consumed, and a short season that can be quickly watched in just a single day. I sure hope to see more of this show!

Eaglemoss Graphic Novel Collection #1 Star Trek Countdown

Volume 1 The Countdown: THE YEAR IS 2387. The Galaxy threatened by the Hobus star, which will soon go supernova and destroy the surrounding planets if nothing is done. Spock, now the official Feder…

I’ve read it long ago, but it was nice to revisit this story. It’s the first issue of the Eaglemoss Graphic Novel Collection, and it’s a story that’s been somewhat invalided by the recent Star Trek: Picard series, if only for some minor points, Picard’s situation being the main one.

Star Trek Discovery – Fear Itself

An original novel based upon the explosive new Star Trek TV series on CBS All Access.

Lieutenant Saru is a Kelpien, a member of a prey species born on a world overrun by monstrous predators…and a being who very intimately understands the nature of fear. Challenged on all sides, he is determined to surpass his origins and succeed as a Starfleet officer aboard the USS Shenzhou. But when Saru breaks protocol in order to prove himself to his crewmates, what begins as a vital rescue mission to save a vessel in distress soon escalates out of control. Forced into a command role he may not be ready for, Saru is caught between his duty and the conflicting agendas of two antagonistic alien races. To survive, he will need to seek a path of peace against all odds, and risk compromising the very ideals he has sworn to uphold…

Released in 2018 after the first season, this is a fantastic science fiction novel by James Swallow, an author given the unenviable task of writing a full length Star Trek novel with only a dozen episodes to base the characters on. 99% of the back story is fantastic, though there’s two minor back story issues that don’t really matter at the end of the day. Swallow was able to capture the character voices and write an action story that kept me interested the entire time I was in the book.

I did find it interesting that this book featured drone ships like in the Enterprise War, released just a year later.
