51ypq2JV7VL. SL1000 Boss Baby

In this hilarious original comedy, we meet a very unusual baby on an extraordinary secret mission, told from the POV of his immensely imaginative 7-year-old brother, Tim.

I agree that this is a somewhat original comedy, though I’m sure I’ll be able to find the grown up version out there, where an angel or heaven sent entity of some sort comes to earth to stop a plot or help an Earther with their lives. Despite my initial misgivings, I was impressed with the movie and enjoyed the arc that all the characters completed.

51E5XFFKRML To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar

Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo star as three “girls” who just wanna have fun in a hilarious comedy about repairing broken hearts, broken dreams and broken nails.

It’s Flash Dance, but instead of sinful dancing, it’s sinful fashion. I’d never seen it before and my wife was insistent that the experience would be transformative, and she was right, it was a great film.

61UaBwiiE4L Faith & the Future Force

Every second will count when acclaimed writer Jody Houser (Mother Panic, Star Wars: Rogue One), explosive artist Stephen Segovia (Ninjak, Action Comics), comics legend Barry Kitson (Fantastic Four), and special surprise guests push Faith into a centuries-spanning fight for existence alongside the greatest heroes of the valiant universe…past, present, and future!
Faith “Zephyr” Herbert – former member of Unity, current Harbinger Renegade, and Los Angeles’ #1 superhero – is the universe’s last, best chance at survival! Centuries from today, a devious artificial intelligence has unleashed a blistering attack on the very foundations of time…one that is the unwriting history from beginning to end! Now, with her options exhausted, Neela Sethi, Timewalker – the self-appointed protector of what is and will be – has returned to the 21st century to recruit Earth’s greatest champions of today and tomorrow to oppose this existential threat…and she needs Faith to lead them! But why Faith? And why now?

Fly to the farthest edges of the future right here in a death-defying race to save time itself as Faith leads the charge alongside Valiant’s greatest heroes…and becomes a new legend for the ages!

Collecting FAITH AND THE FUTURE FORCE #1-4.

Received for free through NetGally, I feel like I was dropped into the middle of a time and dimension spanning story, but it wasn’t as jarring as some recently read comics. I did have questions about who “Faith” was and they were not answered in this book, so I’ll be doing some googling later today about the character. The only reason I got this was I saw Rai from the 4001 AD mini series on the cover, but he only appears for a couple panels and is dead in several others (time travel shenanigans, ‘natch).

Despite the lack of context and absolutely no “previously on”, I do feel like I got a complete story out of the book, though it would have been helpful to have a story primer with a character index.

81XogAUvLDL. SL1500 730x1024 Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday

Jason Voorhees, living, breathing essence of evil is back for one fierce, final fling! Tracked down & blown to bits by special FBI taskforce everyone now assumes that he’s finally dead.

I note that there was a change from Paramount to New Line, not sure if that explains the change in quality, but this film had a distinct USA Up All Night feel to it, very cheap and the acting was…unfortunate. Considering the other movie’s low bar in acting, it was unfortunate that the budget and/or skills just weren’t there. I’m particularly dissatisfied with the whole “jumping from body to body” concept, it seems to completely dismiss Jason’s true horror of a massive, impossible to stop monster that’s coming to get you and your only defense is to completely destroy his body. I know that there are further disappointments down this road, as I vaguely recall seeing Jason X, but it’s still sad to see such a horror icon reduced to being a monster of the week.

    91J8Yn7PDL. SL1500 766x1024 Steel (1997)

Shaquille O’Neal sheds his hi-tops for a dazzling suit of battle armor as the latest and greatest DC Comics superhero to wage war on crime.

Pure 90’s cheese, this is actually a pretty fun movie that didn’t get the love that it deserved back in the day.

I blame it’s reception completely on the fact they didn’t give him rocket boots and instead he had some kind of goofy grappling hook instead.

51rALh0OouL Secret Avengers, Vol. 1: Mission to Mars

Collects Secret Avengers #1-5. Who are the Secret Avengers? Are they a covert team of heroes working the darkest corners of the globe to stop disaster? Are they part-spy, part-super hero? Are they Steve Rogers’ newest idea to save the world…or all they all of the above?

There wasn’t much of a “previously on” in this, the FIRST BOOK of the comic series. I have no idea why Captain America is running around all secretively and why there’s multiple Avengers teams out there during this time period. Even more frustrating they go off to Mars to fight a bad guy that’s been around longer than any other villain you’ve ever heard of and they wipe the floor with him in just a couple issues. It was way over the top and not very enjoyable at all and I regret spending money on the book.

I’m going to stop buying Marvel books, the last few I’ve bought have been like this, utterly confusing unless you’ve bought into the storyline for the last 20 years and no appropriate sense of scale for the storylines that they put out. I have a pile of about 50 more Marvel books to go through, so while I have doubts that any of the others are going to be any good, I’ll give them their fair shake.
