Two New Star Trek: Prodigy books announced!

TrekCentral is passing on the information that there are now two upcoming Star Trek: Prodigy books, “Star Trek: Prodigy: A Dangerous Trade” by Cassandra Rose Clarke and “Star Trek: Prodigy: Supernova” by Robb Pearlman.

While traveling through the Delta Quadrant, the Protostar crew discovers a worn transporter coil on their ship. Despite Janeway’s misgivings, the crew decides to trade a Starfleet-issued battery for new transporter parts at a market on a distant planet. Little do they know that a group of rogue traders are intent on getting their hands on something much bigger: the Protostar! Will the crew be able to defend their ship and stay out of trouble? When the Protostar crash-lands in a peculiar star system, the crew ends up separated and Dal and Gwyn must work together to find their missing crewmates. My journey back through Robin’s movies have landed me at one of his most memorable roles. There’s a lot to like here from Robin himself, but the setting of the movie makes all the humor punch much differently if it were just a funny film. Instead we get a sad look at a sad situation that a whole bunch of hopeful people were caught up in but fortune didn’t look out for them.

In the country of the blind, the one-eyed man, of course, is king.

Anyone that’s seen Idiocracy knows this story pretty well: a man frozen in time is awoken in the far future and learned that the idiots have inherited the Earth because the smart people were too busy being smart while the dumb people were all out there breeding. The solution in this story from 1951 is vastly different than the one in Idiocracy, here they’re just straight up killing off the surplus people by making them want to take a trip to an off planet colony. The story was written before hormonal birth control was widely known of, which takes the teeth out of the threat proposed.

It’s a fun thought experiment to look back on to see what people were thinking of at the time and it’s interesting to see that the ideas we have now were expressed nearly 80 years ago in similar ways.
