    Happy birthday to Ethan Phillips!

He has acted in many of the major regional theaters across the country as well as on and off Broadway, and has appeared in many television shows including Star Trek: The Next Generation,, NYPD Blue, Chicago Hope, Murphy Brown, Law and Order, HBO’s From the Earth to the Moon, as well as playing “Pete” for five seasons on Benson. Xanadu

Xanadu: Directed by Robert Greenwald. With Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly, Michael Beck, James Sloyan. A struggling artist living in Los Angeles meets a girl who may hold the key to his happiness.

opening universal logo thing had an airplane, another airplane, a ufo

Opens with an artist doing art while the beginning credits happen, he rips up his art and throws it out his window, and it hits a wall, bringing wall art to life, it’s our first song! I’m alife! ONJ is there to drance for us! Then they turn into color beams that fly around Hollywood, one of them turns back to a human, (it’s ONJ) and she’s rollar skating, runs into a guy (it’s the artist!, then kisses him. he stares at her is erotic shock, then she leaves him.

Turns out the artist is a down on his luck artist who quit his job to do his art as a professional artist, but his art isn’t popular enough, so he’s back to working for The Man. He is not happy about this fact. But then he’s given a job to enlarge an album cover and wouldn’t you know it, it’s the girl! Turns out that no one knows who she is and he’s on the hunt to find her. The album producer has no clue, the photographer has no clue, so now he’s just wandering the streets asking random people who she is.

As he’s wandering, he runs into an old buddy playing the clarinet on the beach, it’s Gene Kelly! There’s several more transitional scenes, and we get back to the buddy’s house, which is a damn mansion, where the artist and his buddy listen to a single track on a record, then the artist out, and the buddy is listening to the next track, where he dreams he’s dancing with ONJ.

Turns out that buddy’s looking for a new venue for a club, and the artist mentions it to his muse, who suggests they use the warehouse / auditorium that she lives in. The artist and buddy go check it out and start having some dreams about what they’re going to do with the property which involve another musical bit with a “rock band” and a 50’s style band, all with an appropriate amount of body jiggling and bondage. When the dream sequence ends, buddy declares that he’s going to do it, and with ONJ’s help, they name it “Xanadu”. Buddy then tells the artist that he’s going to be his partner!

They’re planning what to do in the building, and the artist and his lady friend leave for the night, he confesses his love for her and she says “yeah, I love you too, which is super weird, that’s not supposed to happen, because I’m a Muse”. I called her that earlier just because it seemed a witty thing to say, but here we are, with her actually being a muse, like a real fantasy creature that’s only on the Earth to inspire men to do great things. All that being said, she’s done her job and Xanadu is being built, so she’s on her way back to her side of the universe, sorry guy! He, of course, doesn’t take this lying down, and with some motivational efforts from his buddy, the artist runs head first into a wall, transporting himself to where ever it is that the Muse lives, convinces her father to let her come back, and she’s there for the opening night of Xanadu!

We then get at least seven different songs, depending on how you split them, all with roller skating and dancing, and some absolutely trippy choreography. This obviously includes a wardrobe change for ONJ in every change!

Now the important question: why do I now own this movie? Why did I buy this? It was literally on a whim, as I dislike purchases odd number of movies when I get them through Vudu, so this got me to $10 even, just because the cover art looked interesting and when I checked on the synopsis it sounded crazy, then I watched the trailer and I noticed that Gene Kelly of all people was in a roller skating musical with Oliva Newton John. Insanity.

My opinion of the film? It’s an insane movie with a bonkers concept that I absolutely love. Everything about this film does it for me, from the acting to the story to the music to the dancing. According to wikipedia, this was Gene Kelly’s last film role, and it absolutely flopped at the theater. The soundtrack did pretty well though with at least 5 of the tracks getting popular attention. Reportedly this film was one of the inspirations for the Razzies, if you could believe that.

If they ever do a 4k/hdr transfer, this is going to go in my physical collection and I’m going to keep an eye open for the vinyl of the soundtrack.

“The New York Times Presents” Framing Britney Spears

Directed by Samantha Stark. With Britney Spears, Liz Day, Felicia Culotta, Hayley Hill. Her rise was a global phenomenon. Her downfall was a cruel national sport. People close to Britney Spears and lawyers tied to her conservatorship now reassess her career as she battles her father in court over who should control her life.

A story designed to do nothing other than make you feel bad about laughing at a millionaire’s mental breakdown and physical assault on a photographer’s car. I’m sure that one day we’ll find out more on the specifics of what’s going on behind closed doors in her life, but this documentary didn’t make me feel any better about her situation.

SonofSimon: “So I asked Bill a question some of you are thinking of if you’re into that world, which I find to be pretty interesting. So, supposing we hit the body with a tremendous, whether its ultraviolet or just very powerful light, and I think you said, that hasn’t been checked but you’re gonna test it. And then I said, supposing it brought the light inside the body, which you can either do either through the skin or some other way, and I think you said you’re gonna test that too, sounds interesting. And I then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in one minute, and is there a way you can do something like that by injection inside, or almost a cleaning. Because you see it gets in the lungs, and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it’d be interesting to check that. So you’re going to have to use medical doctors, but it sounds interesting to me, so we’ll see. But the whole concept of the light, the way it goes in one minute, that’s pretty powerful.” – Trump

Level 104 Olivier Deriviere 11-11 Memories Retold

Level 104: Olivier Deriviere 11 11 Memories Retold

Presenting another amazing score by French composer Olivier Deriviere in this episode. For 11-11: Memories Retold, Olivier used the Philharmonia Orchestra. This orchestra is one of a handful of permanent, salaried orchestras in London, which means it’s a big deal. They’re primarily a performance ensemble, and while they’ve recorded soundtracks/scores in the past, it’s not their main gig.

The Pinewood Singers are featured on many tracks as well.

This is a gorgeous score, recorded in a unique way (for a game!) and executed brilliantly by the musicians. Lots of love for this one.

Tender Moment Between Man And His Sick Dog

    original.jpg (1 MB)

    www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/08/man-dog-lake-superior-photo-_n_1755609.html

They say a dog is a man’s best friend, but to John Unger, a Wisconsin resident, his dog, Schoep, means everything.

Unger adopted Schoep, named after the famous Wisconsin ice cream, when he was just a puppy, and the two have been together ever since. Now, at 19 years old, Schoep has arthritis and has trouble sleeping, the Pioneer Press reports. Unger found that water is therapeutic for his pained buddy, so he takes Schoep into Lake Superior and lulls him to sleep.

Photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, owner of Stonehouse Photography and a friend of Unger’s, decided to capture the relationship between the man and his dog down by the water.

“Shep falls asleep every night when he is carried into the lake. The buoyancy of the water soothes his arthritic bones. Lake Superior is very warm right now, so the temp of the water is perfect.”

Oil Rig fire near Tumbler Ridge 1988.jpg (3 MB)

In 1988 I caught a chopper ride to this oil rig courtesy of Ed Taras of Canadian Hunter. The sound this blazing rig fire was making was louder than standing next to a jet engine, and the hellish heat wouldn’t let me get any closer. The sensory overload was so intense I never saw the four firefighters walking next to the rig until I received the prints back from the developer. I think I took the photo with my first SLR, an old Yashica 35mm camera and Kodak 400 asa film. I sold one of the photos from this series under the table to a photographer from the Alaska Highway Daily news.

A seal pup born with rare brownish-red fur and blue eyes has been rescued from a beach on an island off Russia, in the Caspian Sea, after it was abandoned by its mother.
Photographer Anatoly Strakhov found the baby on Tyuleniy Island, away from the other seals on the beach.
“He was hiding and waiting for his mother to come and feed him,” Mr Strakhov said.
Mr Strakhov caught the seal and took it to a dolphinarium where it is being cared for.

    Andy Whitfield 17 July 1972 – 11 September 2011

    Andy_Whitfield_by_Gage_Skidmore.jpg (181 KB)

    andy-whitfield-spartacus-2.jpg (91 KB)

In March 2010, Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and began treatment immediately in New Zealand. This delayed production of season two of Spartacus: Blood and Sand. While waiting for Whitfield’s treatment and expected recovery, the network produced a six-part prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, with only a brief uncredited voiceover from the actor. Although declared cancer-free only two months later, he suffered a recurrence of the disease later in the year and was ultimately forced to leave the role. Starz recast Australian actor Liam McIntyre as Spartacus.

A short 18 months after his cancer diagnosis, Whitfield died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma on September 11, 2011. The actor’s manager, Sam Maydew, and Whitfield’s wife, Vashti, issued a statement confirming his death in Sydney, Australia ‘surrounded by his family’. In her statement, Vashti said: “On a beautiful sunny Sydney … morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18-month battle with lymphoma cancer.” He is survived by his wife and two children.

Steven DeKnight, the creator of Spartacus, said “No words to express the depth of such a loss. You will be deeply missed, my brother.” Lucy Lawless, Whitfield’s co-star in Spartacus, described him as “a gentle man who never said a bad word about anyone, a gifted photographer, engineer (no really!) and a brilliant actor. Andy’s incandescent film presence made men want to be him and women want to marry him. Andy’s two babies will always know that their Daddy cherished them and their mother, Vashti, above all things. How lucky we were to have him grace all our lives. Godspeed, Andy!”

The Story of the Kissing Couple (6 pics)

taken by photographer Richard Lam as violence erupted following the Canucks’ 4-0 defeat by the Boston Bruins. The couple have been identified, as Australian Scott Jones and his Canadian girlfriend Alex Thomas. Scott has been in the country for six months, working as a bar tender while he tries to make it as a stand-up comedian. Alex is a student at the University of Guelph in Ontario and the couple have not been dating long. They were between the riot police and the rioters, and the riot police were charging forward, and Alex got knocked by a police shield and fell to the ground. Scott was comforting her and gave her a kiss to say, ‘It’s going to be OK,’ and the photographer just took the shot at that moment. Alex is now recovering from the bruised leg she suffered as she fell to the ground.

    pinhole.jpg (308 KB)

This dream-like picture shows each phase of the sun over Bristol’s Clifton Suspension Bridge taken during half a year.

The image was captured on a pin-hole camera made from an empty soda can with a 0.25mm aperture and a single sheet of photographic paper.

Photographer Justin Quinnell strapped the camera to a telephone pole overlooking the Gorge, where it was left between December 19, 2007 and June 21, 2008–the Winter and Summer solstices. (That’s a 15,552,000 second exposure.)

‘Solargraph’ shows six months of the sun’s luminescent trails and its subtle change of course caused by the earth’s movement in orbit. The lowest arc being the first day of exposure on the Winter solstice, while the top curves were captured mid-Summer.

They lived in a dugout and struggled to survive on Resettlement Administration land.

As the 1930s came to a close, Kodak came out with Kodachrome film – the first commercially viable color film available to the general public. In 1937 and 1938, the colors were still not stable and accurate, but by 1939 Kodachrome was producing color images of remarkable precision.

Now, not just anybody could buy this film. It cost $5 per roll and had to be sent back to Rochester, New York for development. By comparison, in 1938 Congress established the first minimum wage at 25 cents per hour. $5 represented half a week’s work. But the Farm Security Administration sent out about a dozen photographers with this new film. Commercial photographer, Samuel Gottscho, and well-to-do amateur, Charles Cushman, embraced this new technology, as well.

    Congo Soldiers: Rambo Style!

    Congo Soldiers 1.jpg (149 KB)

If you’ve read the Congo Diaries of Che Guevara, you realize soldiers haven’t really changed. If they managed to discourage the revolutionary leader, they still manage to annoy most Congolese.

I’ve met good and bad soldiers in DR Congo. I’ve drank beer with some, shared thoughts with others, I even spent new year’s eve with better ones. I can both admire and despise the men in uniform.

A soldier in Congo is basically anyone who has fatigues and a gun. Like anyone with a camera can claim to be a photographer.

So there, you have a gun, you’re a soldier. Your boss (who drives a nice 4×4) takes a cut of your salary. That is, if you get a salary. In better days, you get twenty bucks a month.

They give you no food. You’re hungry, so you go see farmers and others. You’re gun is a good argument for them to share the little they have.

In fact, the gun is the reason you enrolled. It gives you power you otherwise could never get. So you develop the attitude of importance. Everyone else is shit and thank God you’re not doing all the physical labor other people do.

Your routine is to keep guard of a road, a building or important people. The army is for hire: if you need security, you can call on them. But much of the task is boring.

Then there’s trouble. You hear a few bullets, and you make a run for your life. It’s not worth 20 bucks to stick around. Tomorrow is another day, and you wanna be there to see it!

Everyone ran away like you. Chaos reigns. The bullets are far away now. There’s no more authority. Pillage time. Rape if you can. This is your chance, make the best of it.
