    “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” Review

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire: Directed by Gil Kenan. With Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace. When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age.

A perfectly worth entry into the Ghostbusters franchise, I’m happy with how the small steps they’re taking seem to be building towards something larger, but all while making good smaller stories. This is something that Marvel use to do very well, but then they transitioned to focusing more on the meta story and less on the single story and now we’re in the mess we’re in now with them. This movie however is a fun one with internal consistency, good call backs that aren’t too heavy handed, includes great foreshadowing and includes all the necessary guest stars that are all more than just cameos. My only complaint, and it’s a small one that I can easy forgive, is that there’s returning characters from the first film, both of whom were living hundreds of miles away and are somehow how living down the street from the Ghostbuster family. I was ok with the explanations, but it was funny to see them again.

  • “Road House” Review

Road House: Directed by Doug Liman. With Jake Gyllenhaal, Daniela Melchior, Conor McGregor, Billy Magnussen. Ex-UFC fighter Dalton takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse, only to discover that this paradise is not all it seems.

The original “Road House” movie is a classic of pure machoism mixed in with small town corruption and this reimagining holds true to the basic premise, doing it justice in a modern setting. I found it entertaining and would suggest that it’s a great movie, except there was a creative decision to use some funny looking “impact” camera work during the fights, which made the stunt work look face and forced. Added to that is the concept of two guys that just straight up can’t be knocked out, no matter what hits their head or how hard it hits them, and several of the fights are just silly no stakes, no impact boring slugfests that just end up with two well muscled and beautiful men walking away from the encounters breathing heavy and looking sexy with minor wounds.

Just to be clear though, I do enjoy seeing Jake Gyllenhaal without a shirt on, so if you’re in the same camp, you may find this movie worth your time.

    “The Matrix” Review

The Matrix: Directed by Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski. With Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving. When a beautiful stranger leads computer hacker Neo to a forbidding underworld, he discovers the shocking truth–the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence.

AMC had it back in theaters for it’s 25th anniversary and I was completely stoked to finally get to see it in theaters, I was a poor college freshman when it came out the first time, and at the time it wasn’t exactly easy to see movie trailers without going to the movies or watching tv, so I completely missed out on the trailers and I only watched it because a copy was being passed around the dorm floor and it came highly recommended. The theatrical experience was amazing, the dolby theater I saw it in was nearly filled to capacity, I had some peanut M&Ms, and spent the entire time silently saying all the lines along with the characters on the screen, usually with a giddy smile on my face.
