Per wikipedia, the film was conceived of, written, produced, filmed, and released all within a few months of the global covid-19 pandemic breaking national borders and infecting hundreds of millions and killing millions of those that were unable to fight off the infection. The movie feels as crass as you would expect, with a barebones story of an immune man trying to save his presumably immune girlfriend from the corrupt government that’s forcing all the non-immune people into a “Q-Zone” where they’re presumably living great lives, just like your dog that went upstate to the farm. Most of the action beats aren’t very good and the finale is just rubbish, but I’m happy to have been able to see this, just to tell you that you shouldn’t.

Last Woman on Earth

No clue how I missed this in my period where I was watching every post-apocalyptic film I could get my hands on, but here it is, one of the first versions of the story that I’ve run into. Released in 1960, it’s a full 25 years before “The Quiet Earth” which has the same conceit of “what happens when you’re the last person on earth, find out there’s a woman, then find out there’s another man?” The details are all different, but I believe this is the earliest example of this type of story.
It’s not bad either, Betsy Jones-Moreland is downright captivating as the ‘kept’ woman of a super rich guy always in trouble with the local politicians and the dynamic between the two male leads is believable and entertaining.
