A Target Sex-Trafficking Hoax Is Going Viral on TikTok

A stranger-danger hoax is sweeping social media — but as one expert explains, the urban legend is “old wine in new bottles”

Anti-trafficking experts are highly skeptical of these reports. “I have never heard a case of anyone being abducted from Target in my 20 years in this field,” says Jean Bruggeman, executive director of Freedom Network USA, a national network of anti-trafficking advocates.

    “It is something you only see in movies” EXACTLY. 99% of people who are raped/kidnapped KNOW THE PERPETRATOR. The person who starts a trafficked person’s rape career is also almost always someone they know. It’s an abuse of trust. Hardly anyone just gets nabbed off the street by a stranger (cue someone with a vested interest in the “stranger danger” myth linking several stories of just that happening as if they weren’t outliers).
