McDowall genuinely seems to have been one of the nicest guys in Hollywood. He even maintained a friendship until her death with cantakerous Louise Brooks. He described meeting her for the first time as one of the most devastating experiences of his life. She was living in poverty, alone, in a tiny, Spartan apartment. He broke down in tears in the lift afterwards. “All that furious intelligence and energy trapped in that room. It was heartbreaking.”
