I remember going to see this in a movie theater. I’d never seen anything like it before and since most of it was created artificially and set inside an artificial world, it gave me a strange, claustrophobic, stifling feeling. Very uncomfortable. It was beautiful aesthetically (and still is) but I was bored out of my mind by it. I’ve got a much higher tolerance level for it now. Interesting side note – I watched a ‘making of’ doc and some of the nicest stuff (those glowing lines on the characters) is actually trad animation.
As usual, The American Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences (with the emphasis on ARTS and SCIENCES) has no idea what art and science is. Unbelievable short sightedness. They had no idea how ground breaking it was.
Ha ha! Through this link, saw a piece on the ‘birth’ of the Alien chest-burster scene, which came from the book Shock Value, and have now got my eager, sweaty little hands on it thanks to the library system. Thank you for existing public libraries!

and if I understand it, it was the animation and cgi that disqualified it from the special effects awards
