We have one of those costumes here in Seattle at The Experience Music Project. I did some maintenance on the pods they are kept in, and I have touched that costume. It is made of wool- and I can only imagine that it took super powers not to constantly be itching yourself if you were wearing it.
In those days they wore asbestos t-shirts too.
