The German text is actually clearer, it says (in a direct translation manner): “Audrey got strife with her family, when they heard that she WENT out with a black man.” In the German version, it is more probable (but not necessarily 100%) that she is no longer together with the black man. A possible reason why they are not together is that she may have unjustifiably dumped him, and perhaps for that reason her family are angry with her… you know, for being a picky bitch.
