Because they are bastards and believe they are the super race. I was reading their official website yesterday and thought.. Wow this would make a good science fiction novel and then BAM! I realised that it was pulled out of an ass by a science fiction writer! What a weird coincidence that a FICTION writer made all this up.

It’s an experiment in behavioral science! Science fiction guy said, “Hmm, I’m not a behavioral scientist, but this would make for super lulz when they put me in the grave! I’ll make up a religion!”

And so he followed in the path of the twelve disciples, who had an in depth knowledge of the prophecies of the Jews and made their books to fit.

Actually, scientology is the result of a bar bet between Hubbard and two other sci-fi authors as to who could create their own religion, unfortunately Hubbard started believing his own bullshit and it got the better of him.
